differences between 77 and 78

Recommended Posts

So as my previous post said I have a new Z. My current Z is a 78 and the new one is a 77. What are the differences between the two? I think that pretty much everything is the same right? Suspension, engine, body? I would like to put my current suspesion from my 78 on it since it is new. Shouldn't be a problem right? Also I will be swapping all the new stuff from my engine. None of this will occur soon since I will be making the body nice first but I would like to double check. I know there are gurus out there that know all the subtle differences and thought I would ask and see.

Thanks all and thanks for the continued support. I'll post pics of my new find soon,

Kyle

One difference I will point out that is that the alternator of the 1978 280Z is internally regulated whereas the 1977 has a external voltage regulator. Because of this there are minor wiring harness changes. So, in other words, the alternators will _not_ swap.

I have a 77 daily driver and a 78 parts car. I noticed no differences at all when swapping suspension stuff over. Also, the alternators were the same. Not sure if the PO of the parts car did something weird or not, but both were externally regulated.

I also have a 77 and a 78. The 78 is my parts car as well, I'm and currently rebuilding the 77. In comparing my cars, their wiring insider the cabin is different, but could be because one came w/ ac and is an automatic, the other is base model manual.

What are you planning to swap besides suspension?

What I am trying to do is swap the engine, trans and diff into the 77 from the 78 am I gonna run into problems as well?
