Mikelly
So my wife's BMW is due for a tranny filter and fluid change... I have ordered the filter and gaskets for the pan. However, The book calls for Dextron II (not 3) compatible fluid and I can NOT for the life of me find ANY... Soo the Question is this, What is the difference in 2 and 3? Anyone else know what the E36 BMW used in the auto tranny??? This one is a 97 328i. Mike
Tim240z
Mike, I remember reading somewhere that the fluids are 'backwards compatible', so D3 is an acceptable substitute for D2. Maybe a call to the service advisor at the Stealership to confirm?
PeterZ
A agree with Tim that the fluids are compatible. I got out of BMW repairs to go to a Datsun shop in '95 but did a lot of trans rebuilds on the ZF 4HP22/ET automatics until then. The newer ones are not supposed to have fluid changes! There's no dipstick or filler plugs.

Mikelly
This unit has a drain and fill plug, the main body pan and the pan at the front where the torque converter sits. So I'll plan to use Dextron III then. Mike
