Bimmerman
I am concidering a t56 for my V8Z and was reading about them. Are they a direct bolt up to older chevy V8's or do they require kits like the Chevy t56?

Mikelly
I had a tech article published on the web a while back with step by step on what you needed for doing this with a Pre-86 block Chevy, using the 93-97 Camaro T56 tranny and all the related supporting parts... However, I can't find the orininal (Probably lost in bit heaven) and can't locate it on the web anywhere... It can be done, and the only issue is using a specific flywheel from Centerforce (153tooth) for the two piece rear main and getting the plumbing for the hydraulics together... Pop N Wood
Aren't the Tremec built T56's used with the late model LS1's and LS2's? If so it is not the same transmission as the 93-97 Camaro T56's. They would be more like the 98 and up boxes. They are not interchangeable. Bimmerman
I checked tremics web site and they sale a T56 made for other models. http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/products/T-56.asp
Mikelly
Pop, You are correct in that the Tremec T56 in the LS1/LS2/LS6 based vehicles is the same tranny, but required a different setup altogether because of input shaft length issues and bellhousing depth issues...There is an adapter kit out there made by a few different companies, but the best solution is to find the 93-97 setup and go with the appropriate flywheel for either the two piece rear main, or the one piece rear main, depending on your block configuration. Bimmerman
http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/frame.html?/BorgWarner/bwt56.html TREMEC’s GM aftermarket replacement T-56 six speed is designed to replace the T5 five speed in the 82-92 Camaros and Firebirds. This transmission can be used for many other applications with small modifications. Installation is not as hard as you might think. Use the links in the Tremec T56 Navigation bar to help you understand what it will take to do the installation.
Bimmerman
I called and talked to someone and they said that with the tremec trans all you need is stock flywheel and clutch and to use a chevelle or z28 stock bellhousing and i bolts up. Pop N Wood
Alright looks like you have it covered. I thought you were looking for a salvage unit. If it came out of a late model GM then it is not the same thing as the early units. But since you are buying a new replacement unit specifically designed for the 1st gen SBC and LT's, you should be good to go.
Bimmerman
well I have done some pricing and I think I am just gonna stick with automatic and get me a stage 3 200-r4 from www.bowtieoverdrives.com they are only $1350 and a 2400 stall converter sales for $265. The tremec trans alone is $2200. I would perfer a 6 speed over and auto but not looking to spend that much.
Mikelly
You can get a T56 salvaged for around $1000... I'd go that route over the 200R4, hands down. Mike
Bimmerman
Yea but you never know if it is good one or not and how much abuse it has had. Plus the parts to make it work with an older engine are very costly. Just the adaptors to bolt it up are $600-700. Then it requires a specail flywheel that is around $250-300. And then you still need all the other parts which cost about another $450-650. So on the low end you have at least $1300 invested to get a trans bolted up that may or may not be good. The tremec is cheaper because the trans is $2200 and all the other parts together to get it bolted up can't be no more than a couple hundred and you have a brand new trans with warranty. BWRex
I was thinking about the same thing in my 71 Z.I've got a TPI 350 2bolt out of a 89 Trans Am GTA.Could I use the stock flywheel/clutch and bellhousing from the original T-5 for the T-56? Mikelly
You could also go to D&D and buy the TKO600 with street gears and have it delivered for under $1800. That trans is lighter, stronger, and a perfect alternative to the T56... I have one of those instead of the T56 now. Mike
