HB280ZT
Hi All, Well my question tonight is whether I need the NP-valve or not?? What I am thinking about doing is replacing it with a proportioning valve on the rear side and a coupler for the front. Will this work or will it cause problems? For the poeple who say what is an NP-valve?? It is located after the brake indicator switch on my 1977 280Z. It is located on the firewall, drivers side near the tranny bellhousing. From my reading in the FSM it is in the system to prevent the rear wheels from locking up. So if I get rid of it as part of my rear disk brake conversion will it cause any problems? Also is there an adapter that I will need to put in the proportioning valve an coupler?? Thanks for your help. HB280ZT
HB280ZT
Come on guys! No one here has ever tried to replace the NP-valve with something else, say a proportioning valve?? How do the people who race there Z's setup there brakes?? Do they get rid of the brake indicator switch or the NP-valve or both?? Any .02 is appreciated. johnc
Most guys I know road race 240Zs and the NP valve that you describe wasn't installed on those cars. The other switch is the brake warning switch and it turns on a indicator light in the dash if the pressure differential between the front and rear baking systems exceeds 185 to 242 psi. Whether you remove the NP, Brake Warning, or Prop Valve in the brake system depends on the brake system you plan to install and your intended use. Give us that information and we can help. HB280ZT
John, I am currently running the Wilwood setup that Dave at ARIZONAZCAR.COM RACING BRAKE KITS FOR 1970-1978 Z on the front and I have all of the parts except the lines for the 280ZX rear disc brakes conversion. I also am running the 15/16 master cylinder. Other then that it is stock. I hope this answers your question. HB280ZT
JMortensen
You probably won't need a proportioning valve at all since your fronts are so much bigger than your rears. You can always put the prop valve in and open it all the way up, then take it out if the rears still don't feel like they're doing anything. I expect the rears would work a LOT better if you ponied up for the AZC rear brake kit.
HB280ZT
I would love to go with the rears that Dave has but I need an emergency brake right now. Also I don't have the money right now to do that conversion. Basically I am just tiring to get the car back together after new floor pans, frame rails, minor engine work and major electrical work to include a MegaSquirt V3 system. So for now I will just have to put the big brake kit on hold and just do the 280ZX conversion. So if I remove the NP-valve and replace the top part with a coupler and the proportioning valve on the bottom it should work fine? Thanks for the help. JMortensen
I don't know about John, but I'm not particularly keen on telling you to disable warning lights in your car. But if it were a race car then I'd run the plumbing without any extra valves or sensors and use a proportioning valve in the rear.
HB280ZT
As for the brake indicator switch I am planning on keeping it but I am still thinking about replacing the NP-valve with a proportioning valve. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT
