Guest norm[T12SDSUD]
I got a sweet RED 1997 Pontac GTP 4 Door today. My wife has driven a 99 Grand Prix with the 3.8L for the last 3 years and we have been really pleased with it and when I found out my neighbor up the road was selling his tonight I decided just to add another Pontiac to my stable! I now have 6 cars!!! Man I have to sell something but I like them all!! HAHA I have been researching tonight and people really have these GTP's FLYING!! Some of these cars are dipping into the high 11's and low 12's with just a cam exhaust and a higher boost pulley! Looks like I might end up with a family car that roasts my own Z!! haha I don't have any money for mods at this time though so it will stay stock for at least the next year. I figure bone stock it ought to be good for high 14's. With a chip ,higher boost pulley and drag radials I'd imagine mid to high 13's would be fairly easy in this ride. Anyway, this is the first time I have ever had his and her cars!! LOL Later,Norm
Workinprogress
Congrats on the new purchase!! I had a 99 GTP I bought off the showroom floor. I did extensive mods, then killed the tranny. Ballooned the torque converter, burnt up first and second gears. After I spent 3k on the rebuild, I sheared off the INPUT shaft to the tranny twice. Word to the wise, keep the transmission fluid from overheating. This is the weak point of the car, next being the open differential. (if you or the previous owner did any one wheel burnouts, you WILL have problems, when that happens, the carrier goes dry and will seize the spider gears to thier shaft.) That was one of my all time favorite cars, felt rock solid and was very quick off the line, I loved the HUD also. Look at gp-owners.com and grandprix.net. Very good info and boards. Guest norm[T12SDSUD]
Yeah that's good info to know. I'll layoff any long burnouts like I do in the Z! BTW what did you end up turning in the1/4?
Workinprogress
Believe it or not, I never ran it. I did however have a 3.2" pulley (3.8 is stock I think), Borla Cat-Back, computer re-flashed (no chip, must re-program), Transmission cooler, Cold air intake, lowered and koni adjustable struts, larger front and rear sway bars, brake upgrade from an Alero of all things, etc... The thing would beat an LS1 up to 50 or so, but then would run out of breath, once the LS1 would go into 3rd it was all over. (I know this from experience, since my next car was an 02 Camaro SS.) Good luck,
Mikelly
Yup, we almost bought one when we ended up with that dreaded 95S10 Blazer. We test drove a few different 97-98 models and they were nice. Only thing I didn't like was it was front drive, and the only other thing that concerned me was the same thing that concerns me with ALL gm cars (Including my Vette)... Electronic gremlins plague them. But they are simple enough to work on and the superchargers are pretty solid from what I've read. Have fun with it! Guest norm[T12SDSUD]
Yeah I probably won't rag on it since they aren't as tough as I thought. We have driven my 99 Grand Prix normally and so far it has been a great reliable car. I hope this 97 GTP will be as good as the 99! The guy had a stack of service records and it looked like he already changed the water pump and alternator last year so at least those should be good to go!
