deja
I have done some searching here and found a ton of information, you people are amazing. I am about to embark on an engine swap in my 280Z V8. Right now it has a Gen 1 350 and an old Chevy Monza 5 speed, both of which are getting tired. I bought the car this way and the drive train was installed without the use of a setback kit. I will be using a stock '95 Z28 350 LT1 engine in this new setup. I have not decided on a transmission yet. I'm torn between a world class T5, which seem to be hard to find, a T56 and an 4L60E automatic. This car is a daily driver, not a racer, and since I live in the city an automatic would be nice although in seems almost sacrilegious to have an automatic in a sports car. Right now I have 2 questions. Whose mounting KIT do you think works best with a LT1? My second question, I read here that the transmission tunnel needs to be modified to fit a 4L60E. Just how much modification are we talking about?

I would get their Datsun Z V-8 Conversion Manual as well as their Chevrolet TPI & TBI engine Swapping manual. It talks about transmission selections as well as many other items that would probably be of interest to you. You will need to perform some clearancing for just about any transmission, but it would probably be more for an automatic. The amount of clearancing varies, but it just takes some convincing with a sledge hammer here and there.
deja
Thanks, I have both those books and have been wading through them. Certainly a lot of decisions to make. I hope to have a final plan soon.
love-my-V8-280Z
Yes, the JTR kits is the way to go. I tried to skimp several times and its my option that I would have been best off to buy there set back plate, trans cross member, radiator and its supports... My time is worth money and sometimes I plan something to be quick and cheap and I end up doing it twice... I have installed the 95 LT1 and learned a lot in the process. If you want a photo of the set back plates send me an email...
