No more N/A, it's turbo time

So I've switched gears here. Instead of the n/a build I was working on I bit the bullet and commited to buying Proxlamus' turbo-intake manifold that was on ebay, since then I have aquired the turbo ecu, afm, exhaust manifold, J-pipe and oil pan.

I have a L28 block that I had balanced up with dished pistons, my question here, in an effort to save some ca$h, is can I use the N42 head that I have?

I hope I'm not beating a dead horse here, as I started a lasting debate about heads when I was on my n/a trip. I know P90/ P90a (solid lifter) heads are perfect as they have the square exhaust ports and are "the" turbo heads. I've seen a couple threads with some of you using the N42 head for the turbo, so if ya'll don't mind indulging me with advice in an effort to help me save $300 on a head I would be grateful. Thank you!

BTW anyone have leads to a turbo wiring harness, T3 turbo, or down-pipe?

I fired up my N42/N42 turbo setup for the first time yesterday, and it sounds AWESOME, but I had to cut if off cut my oil line was loose for some reason, it will work, but do everything right the first time, it only took me about 3-4 weeks because I had read every little piece of info on the N/a turbo setups on the site. Look over everything. If you need I can help you to an extent, but nienberg.11 told me everything I know, he helped out ALOT.

I know the N42 head has a small quench area, this was my major concern here; I am still stuck in n/a land.

Can you tell what head gasket you guys are using. Apparently, according to the L-calculator, a 2mm head gasket will drop compression down to 7.80:1 with the N42/N42 combo, but I fear, from what little I know about quench, this may be detrimental to performace once the turbo kicks up the compression. But if you guys are confident about the N42 it would be nice for me to save that extra money for parts. Thanks again.

Hey Jess, I have an N42 N/A set up right now. I will be building a turbo set up and I will be biteing the bullet and getting a P90 head. Everything I've read on this site promotes useing the P90. The N42 head will work but you have to have a low static compression (7.4:1 -8:1 ) If your static compression is 8:1 or higher detonation is a real problem because of the chamber designe. With the P90 you can run 8.5:1 without a detenation problem (providing you have the correct AFR and not to much boost and all that other important stuff) the higher CR makes for a "funner" car off boost. Im not saying that an n42 turbo head can't be done, ... clearly it can, and isn't a bad idea, but, I spent time and money on a N/A build when I should have just spent more time and more money on the turbo build. My point is, spend the money, do it right, do it once, and enjoy the WHP!

P.S. and this is an important one, If your gonna go with the N42 head you need to get an aftermarket ECU, Megasquirt or something like that.

this is all just my 2 cents ... feel free to disreguard all of it :burnout:

You have dished pistons and an N42 head. That will give you a stock N/A compression ratio. Dished pistons are the way to maintain proper quench if you have a N42. Flats are the way to go for a p90.

You can use the stock turbo management on your setup. In fact you could even use the N/A wiring harness. It's been done before. Search!

Alright, alright, check me if I'm out line here. Can I forget the Turbo ECU, Turbo AFM, Turbo dizzy and Turbo wiring harness, in exchange for Megasquirt and my N/A dizzy siliconed up to stop advance? I've been reading and if this is the case I'm sold.

Hey thanks everyone for your info, I am going Megasquirt. I was not aware at first that I could ditch the wiring harness, ECU and AFM if I went Megasquirt. Proxlamus set me straight. Collecting parts for the swap just got much easier. :burnout:
