PaulR
I ran across the following site that sells Cobra R wheels: http://www.performancewheeloutlet.com The interesting thing I noticed was that they have some BIG sizes (like 17x10.5 and 18x9) in 4-lug as well as 5 lug! The 4-lug is described as "for earlier Mustangs". Aren't those the same bolt pattern as a Z? (I'm not sure).Prices are pretty good too (ie, $185 for silver finish 17x10.5) If the bolt pattern and backspacing of theses wheels are right, they could be a good alternative. Guest Anonymous
4-bolt mustangs are 4x4.25 I think, not 4.5. And they are not ford wheels, quality of various copies is questionable. I wold only ever use the real ford wheels as they are excellent quality. The copies also often have flaws on them - pits from casting process, crappy finishes, etc. ------------------ Morgan http://z31.com/~morgan/s30 http://carfiche.com
Guest Anonymous
You could probably use them if you used wheel adapters, as Morgan said different bolt pattern. The backspacing will be substantial if they're Mustang wheels, so you'd need the spacers just to clear everything if I'm not mistaken. Mikelly
Not entirely true on the "Factory Copy" issue... I'd give $100 to the person that could pick my lookalike wheel out of a mix of 10 Cobra Rs ... One thing to remember is that many of these wheels being manufactured now days are rolling out of the same plant and off the same assembly line. Guest Anonymous
Didn't you get your wheels from tire rack mike? ------------------ Morgan http://z31.com/~morgan/s30 http://carfiche.com
Mikelly
Not quite. I got my wheels at Summit racing from a "Source". Mine are as good as the originals. As a matter of fact I bought some tires today from a local vendor who has a original Brand new FOMOCO Cobra R wheel I can buy from them for $100 that they ordered for a customer that never picked it up. I had a wheel with me, and they not only looked identical, they weighed the same, and other than the fact that the FOMOCO wheel was painted silver, you couldn't tell them appart... BTW, I bought two 255-40-17s and 2 275-40 17s for the Z!!! Trevor
Early Six cylinder Mustangs from 65-73 used the 4.5"x4-bolt circle, same as the '60-up Falcon. (and Same as Datsun, Toyota, Mazda) V-8s have 4.5" x 5-bolt circle. '74-'78 Mustang II changed to the "Pinto"4.25"x 4 bolt '79 to'93 are 4.25" x 4 bolt. Evan Purple240zt
Another interesting discovery i though i would share. Sears sells Z racing wheels. Well turns out sears buys old molds from companies such as enkie and makes thier wheels from that. My bud has a set that say enkie in the back of the rim. Mikelly
These wheels came from American Eagle Alloy, but I'm not kidding, I took the Cobra center out of the other wheel yesterday and snapped it into my wheel. Also, on the back of both wheels (FOMOCO & THe AEA) they had the same identical stampings... I suspect they came from the same plant. Bottom line is they look good, are reasonably light, and very durable. Price was exceptional!!!
