Guest datsun_80
I'm a new user and this is my first post. I just have some questions for you guys. I am thinking about a V8 conversion and was wondering if any chevy smallblock would work in a 1980 280zx. If so, how come i can only find conversion kits for the z's but not the zx's. Also, if there is a conversion kit is that all i will need to make it happen? Right now i'm just looking at getting a V8 in it I'm planning on getting another and putting all performance parts in it. Can any one help? Thanks, Tim
dr_hunt
The search function seems to provide all the information you need. I just tried it for 280zx v8 conversion mounts and there is a ton of threads. The answer to you questions are easily obtained using the search function. Try using different search words as well, I'm sure that many hours worth of reading await you.
bschiltz
I have a '79 zx that will be getting an '85 305 soon. JTR (jagsthatrun.com) has a mounting kit for the zx cars. As dr_hunt said before, use the search as much as you can, but if you still can't find what you're after, go ahead and ask.
240zV8
definently use the search button... U can plan a whole build from that button. I've spent 6 months just using the search button. I know i'll be posting questions once i start my build, but you can get the basics and alot more from just searching what u need. It's better to learn everything ur gonna need to put a v8 in before u start, than get swamped and frustrated in the middle of it.
Guest ChevZee
I also am in the middle of doing a chevy to z conversion and was wondering if anybody knows if there are any adapters or new bellhousings to mount my 305 to the stock Z transmission, 79 280zx or is the block to wide? dr_hunt
I think the main problem is that the stock z trans won't hold up to the torque. Better to find an another GM trans that will work. Back in the scarab days my boss built a white 260z with the scarab kit and we put a t-10 trans in that car. It was really nice!

What Doc just said. Going through the expense of fabricating a bellhousing or adapter to use the stock Z tranny is just plain foolish. El snappo, boom, and the trans is gone. There are no adapters for that application for good reason. You are better off using or adapting the T5 from a Mustang or Camaro. The Tremec trannys are better and stronger as well. It is money well spent! Davy
Bowtiez
I think the main problem is that the stock z trans won't hold up to the torque. Better to find an another GM trans that will work. Back in the scarab days my boss built a white 260z with the scarab kit and we put a t-10 trans in that car. It was really nice! I put in the Richmond Super T10 in the JTR conversion which jams the bellhousing 4 inches closer to the firewall. The only problem was locating the correct bellhousing that would match the requirements for the Novak hydraulic clutch conversion. Also, I had to cut out the tunnel to make room for the Hurst Super Shifter and the clutch arm. I did not go the hydraulic throwout bearing route because it is not adjustable and if it goes, you have fluid all over the clutch. I would go that route now because of all the fabrication work involved.
