jnjdragracing
Installed a alternator on our Z-car, Alternator came from a 300zx, 1986 model I think. searched this site and wired it up. Used 8 gauge wire from alt. output to fuse panel where it ties into the battery. Used the brown wire to lamp, black wire to ground. Went to the dragstrip last night. Fully charged battery. Tested it, read 12.97 volts. Cranked up car, read 13.7 volts idleing, reved it up some and read 14.7 volts. Seems like the alt. is working right. Well normally at the drag strip, we can go about three rounds before needing to charge the battery. Last night, we had to charge after the 1st pass. Could the alt., be discharging or shorting out the battery? I would think with it working we could go longer with out charging the battery. I know we draw alot of juice, electric water pump, fan, fuel pump, msd ignition, running lights, brake lights. Anyway cut the alt, belt and disconnected it. Any help please.......... VinhZXT
14.7v charging is too weak. I have a Honda alternator in my Z and it's charging at 15. something volts. You might want to try different alternator or get a hi rated amp one from Zman of washington. GL
Cody 82 ZXT
There's nothing wrong with 14.7 volts what you need to worry about is how many amps are being put back into the battery vs how many are being pulled while your doing your thing? jnjdragracing
Thanks, As soon as I get the Engine running right, I will pursue the Alternator again. John
Cody 82 ZXT
One of the better ones that you can try are out of the 90's model Maxima. I forget which one but, They almost all put out atleast 80 amps.

Alex_V
89-94 maximas any of them. 90 and 95 amps I believe. I need to double check that, but thats withing 5-10 amps for either. the 92-94 SE maximas with the DOHC engine have 5 more amps then the other maximas. ~Alex
