Owen
What is the strongest stub axle that will fit on the rears of a 73 240Z? I heard that the 280Z axles are stronger? Will I need a new companion flange as well? Thanks. Owen
Guest scca
yes and yes-- 280 is stronger and the flanges are different splines
pparaska
Like scca-Mike said. And the CV shaft swap can't use the 280ZXTurbo companion flanges for this reason. If you change to the 280Z stub axles, and want to do CVs, you need an adapter like Scottie did a GP of.
Owen
That's what I thought, thanks guys! So I will need to use a flange that mates to the R230 shaft like Curtis is investigating, or to do what Mark did and get adapter plates made... Owen
Thanks, if I switch to the 280Z stub axle, will this affect the position of my brakes, calipers, etc.? What year 280Z is the one to get? Any other cars which can be used with the 1st gen Z? Thanks, Owen
pparaska
Any 280Z will have the correct stub axle. The flange will end up in the same place, so brakes, wheels will be unchanged.
johnc
The 280Z stub axle has 27 splines on the companion flange end, while the 240Z stub axle has 25 splines. The 280Z stub axle is still available from Nissan new and are a better design than original (better radius on the flange to axle weld).
