Project goals are changing...

That's a fact...I guess what I'll probably end up doing is putting the motor in N/A first, and then boost it down the road, so a t-5 should be acceptable as a "what will it take to get 'er runnin'?" type part...It was just the only manual tranny really talked about in the JTR book, and I'm not extra savvy about what models of cheverolet came with what manual tranny, and even less so when it comes to the reputations of a given gearbox.

The members of Hybrid Z have cost me big time money, Mostly the Turbomeister and ScottyGNZ. I was perfectly content with building a 383SBC. Then I got the nagging itch to turbo it. My compression is a tad high at 10:1, but I'm not having problems at low boost (about what you plan on running). My huge intercooler probably saves me. If it starts to knock as I turn up the boost, I'll do water/alcohol injection.

Yup... the old adage is still alive and well..."Speed costs... How fast do you want to spend?"

My answer for that is "No more than I have to." I won't be beating this car to death, so I figured the service life of the T-5 would vary directly with how hard I shift it. I haven't looked, but I imagine one of those would be much easier to come by in a pick-n-pull than a t-56, and around here a tranny from one of those yards is less than $50 if you have a core, regardless of type. So if there is something stronger I could get in the salvage yard, that's what I'll look for. If i had my druthers I'd be using one of these:

...and a non-WC is worth a hill of beans in this application.

I know this may not be a consideration, but I have a WC T5 for a Shelby Cobra kit car I'm building to sell and finance my other car projects-I'm gonna sell it to some dude in a middle age crisis. I plan on driving it around a ritzy part of town with a blond babe next to me. It'll sell itself. Anyway, I digress. My point is that the WC T5 is a lot lighter than a T56. I always brace myself for an aching back when I lift it, only to be surprised by its light weight. The motor it's going behind is a Roush Racing 351 making 400 crank hp, so the T5 is no slouch. It's a good tranny. Will it last behind such power? I don't know. Some sugar daddy's gonna find out the answer to that when his Cobra drops a tranny while cruising with some 20 year old hottie.

Is the world class t-5 strictly aftermarket, or is that who bought the t-5 after borg warner was done with it? How would I be able to tell the difference just by looking? If OEM, what year and model would have been equipped with such a thing?

 

Some factory cars came with them. Google it... that'ell keep you busy for a while :-)

Nope... just in tune with reality. And BTW... what's wrong with dirty old men running around with 20-year-old babes. If they can afford the sugar daddy goodies and the Viagra, MORE POWER TO THEM:mrgreen: Frankly, I'M ENVIOUS!!:icon56:

So far it seems like the Ford Mustang t-5's are stronger, and they got the world class versions before gm did. I'm still looking to see if either the guts of such tranny are compatible to be swapped into a GM case, or if the gearbox could just unbolt and be put onto a camaro bellhousing. As a piece of trivia, the T-5 on the turbo 280zx is supposedly a ford bolt pattern where it adapts to the bellhousing.

 

*edit* found a flathead Ford page that desribes using a 4 cylinder S-10 gearbox to upgrade to a t-5, since the 4/6 cylinder GM trannies used the ford style bellhousing to main body bolt pattern. The inverse of that should then hold true: If I get a ford t-5 gearbox from say a 5.0 mustang and bolt it to a 4/6 cylinder bellhousing, I should get a decent strength gearbox on a chevy bellhousing. That assumes a few variables: the 4/6 cylinder bellhousing will bolt to a 350, and said bellousing/tranny combo will have the right length input shaft to operate the clutch correctly...

 

The T-5s used behind the four cylinder GM engines used the 'Ford' main case-to-bell housing bolt pattern. The GM V6 (thru the 1992 model year) and V8 versions used the GM trans-to-bell bolt pattern. The Chevy/GM 4 cylinder and V6 trans used a 1" diameter x 14 spline input shaft, while all Ford T5s used a 1-1/16" diameter x 10 spline input shaft.

GM 2WD T-5s used a 27 spline output shaft; Ford used a 28 spline output

The mustang T-5s are known for exploding third gear from a couple articles I read a while back in grassroots motorsports.

Somehow I completely missed this thread. I guess I was at college trying to get an education.

Well I am guessing that your closet of Z stuff will be a little more cluttered now...
