John Greenslade
I am presently restoring my 240Z for my son when he turns 16. I am concerned about the amount of power for a young driver and the lack of any real protection in the event of an accident. Accordingly I have been thinking I should add a roll bar or roll cage. However, I am also concerned that if I put in a full cage (a) he may think he's indestructible and ( its a bit of a pain for passengers to get in and out. Any thoughts. Also, any sources for product or design for a built oneself. Thanks
blueovalz
( is good, then he won't be distracted by his passenger. (a) is bad, and even if you save him, what about the other folks at the other end of a collision. My boy was given an old honda with the rear seat taken out (because of () and with no radio the first 6 months of driving. So far, no accidents and he now has his own car at the ripe old age of 21. Tim240z
John, Being a teenager, he's going to think he's indestructable anyway , so that's a moot point IMO. The cage will afford some protection and will also stiffen the chassis drastically. I am busy putting my 8 point cage from S & W. They are not a perfect fit, but for the price it's unbeatable. They are having a $40 off sale now too . If you are loaded with cash, then you can always have one custom made. I have been quoted anything from $850 to $1800 US. Too rich for my blood. If you are patient and have the tools, then the S & W unit is the way to go. Tim
BLKMGK
IMO - put one in! New drivers almost always have accidents, hence the insurance. If you've restored this car (shiver) then you've probably seen the side impact protection, right? I did, and promptly installed a bar with solid side bars! There's little to no protection.... IF you do this ensure that the bar is padded and that he ALWAYS wears his belt(s). Without them he's worse off then if he had a bar in an accident IMO.... John Scott
What does a roll cage, say 8 pt. add to the weight of the Zcar? JS
