SSflyer
My trans started locking in 4th gear and after seeing the cost of rebuilt units I'm thinking about doing it myself. There's a complete parts kit on EBAY for about 1/4 the cost of a rebuilt, but before I spend the dough I would like to know if this is something a reasonable mechanic can do at home? Anyone here ever had any experience?
mark
I'm on my 3rd T-56. I would be interested in this also. I'll watch this thread.
510six
I tried to dissassemble my T56 using a puller from Rockland Gear.I wasn`t` succesful and was told that T56`s can be real bears to take apart without the correct press and hydraulic pullers. But, I will post a link to Rockland Gear and this.http://para.noid.org/~lj/T56/T56.htm http://www.rsgear.com/kits.html http://www.ls2.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1877

jbc3
I have rebuilt about 10 T56 trannys in my garage. It is not that hard. D&D performance ( http://www.ddperformance.com/ ) sells bearing and synchro kits. They also sell a T56 repair manual. The "locking" in 4th is not that uncommon. There are 3 shift detent clips in the synchro that can bend and break off. If one breaks off it can jam up the transmission and lock it in gear. I have seen several, including one of mine, do the same thing. The clips are about $2 each, but the whole tranny has to come apart to get to them. As far as specialty tools, I have part of a Kent-Moore puller that I used threaded rod and a balancer puller piece to make work and a small press with several different sized bearing puller attachments. Picture of the modified Kent Moore puller http://jodyc.fbody.com/bobs-tranny/kent%20moore%20tool%20and%20puller.jpg Here is a link to the T-56 repair manual .... FREE of charge It's large so it will take some time to download. http://jodyc.fbody.com/T56-manual/T56_service_manual.pdf Here are a few pics of a trashed T-56! He lost all of his detent clips and the tranny managed to go into 2 gears at once... transmissions don't like that very much...this one was never rebuilt. http://jodyc.fbody.com/Davestranny/ Jody
mark
THanks JBC3, I knew some one on here had done this.
SSflyer
Great links! I suspect that rebuilding a trans falls into the same 'you can never do that' category as building your own hybrid z car. Well, I did the first, so maybe this can be done too. Thanks for the link to the manual, I'll download that first, since reading is free....
510six
A large part of the reason I went to a local rebuilder was that He had a T56-016 kit for my particular tranny from Rockland Standard Gear.Getting the kit at close to cost and being able to handle 750rwh sold me. http://www.rsgear.com/RacePerformancefiles/frame.htm
gearheadstik
When you rebuild use a set of billet keys and steel shift fork for 3-4 gear...these two things are very common for locking a t-56 in gear...both parts can be purchased on ebay...last keys I got were 75$ and the shift forks like 25$...Hope this helps you from breakin in the future... qwik240z
My T-56 was bought used and is a POS. It pops out of 3rd, it is hard to downshift to 2nd and it whines in 5th and 6th. I plan to purchase a rebuilt performance unit from Rockland this winter and do the swap. $1595 plus a core charge. They were recommended to me by a racer that has a 2002 Camaro SS. He swears by them. I think if I took it apart, i would have peices all over my garage for the entire winter. I leave thisngs like this to the experts. You have to know your limitations. Good Luck.
