DavyZ
Ive got the catalog and that stuffs pretty expensive... That's why most guys have gone the JTR do-it-yourself route or even the Hooker Headers/Scarab route. By the time you add up the costs of buying the mounts, etc, it gets pricey. At least JTR gives you diagrams to make your own mounts. I know for a fact guys here have made the mounts for pennies. Davy
240zV8
i'm eventually gonna go down that road. I'm gonna goto the steel yard and pickup some metal for the mounts. Biggest expense really is exhaust, and radiator (if you do it yourself).
Challenger
What guage steel do you use for a 350 sbc? At a goodguys carshow I went to a friend of mine was talking to a guy about motor mounts and susp. mounts and the guy said you have to be careful on where you weld, which part you weld first etc. 240zv8-Where in Washington do you live, Im on the east side and wish someone would get a car show together some time! 240zV8
set back plate is 1/2" aluminum spacer is alumunim or steel 1-1/16" passenger side, 2-1/16" drivers side 2nd spacer is aluminum or steel 3/8" thick I'm in Bellingham, and there's no welding when swaping a 350 in, it all bolts up, unless you want to do somthing extra. There's a pretty big Z club around here, but i only went once with a friend and his dad.
240zV8
but for the spacers you can stack them to get the right size
Challenger
So you dont have to do any welding to mount the motor mounts. If I remember correctly the guy had said for whatever car he had he had to weld a plate to the frame rail then bolt or weld the mount to that. Is the datsun different? 240zV8
Nope, the chevy motor mount goes straight to the crossmember hole. Thats why this is such a common swap, because you just have to grind the crossmember mount alittle wider and it's ready for the motor with setback plate, spacer, and chevy motor mount installed to the 350 block. grab the JTR book, it make's me sound like i'm smart..lol
Ledphoot
I did mine with 1969 GMC truck mounts that bolt straight through on the original Z perches and a spacer. Used hugger headers and built a new crossmember for the turbo350 tranny. Used the Z driveshaft shortened with a camaro yoke fitted to the front and rebalanced. 1990 "ish" s-10 blazer 4x4 4.3 ltr with ac and towing radiator with an electric fan. Use grade 8 or better bolts on the mounts and I added a "sakety cable" on the left side from a Grand National just in case I busted a mount. A "one wire" GM alternator and short waterpump for clearance. I did have to remove the hood latch because I used an HEI distributor.
strotter
The cost of the mounts will be the least of your worries. I kept a spreadsheet of all my costs, and that item (the JTR mount kit) is barely visible among the truly LARGE numbers. Heck, I spent more money on door seals than I did on the mounting kit. Listen to 240zV8's advice, get the JTR book. It will detail all the stages necessary to successfully complete a swap - or at least give you a reference point to work from. bschiltz
I've owned it for a year. I bought it from my older brother for $300 and he had it for about 2 years. I think he got it from a couple in Grand Island who bought it new in 79.
