Guest waiting_for_a_z
Hello, I searched around on the site and didn't come across anything about switching a Fairlady 300zxTT (91-92) from auto trans to manual trans. I'm considering importing from Japan, and the auto trans are considerably cheaper in most cases. I was curious if the price of performing the swap would outweigh the cost of just importing a Standard Transmission vehicle. Also, would it be an excersise in frustration to do the swap? Or is there a chance that it's pretty in and out? I don't mind doing all my own metal fabrication work. Anyways, Let me know if you have any information. Thanks, Garret
G.I.jonas
you realize there is a lot of work involved, but sure why not.You have to change over to having the pedal assembly for the clutch as well as putting in the master cylinder for the clutch slave, not to mention that the ecu is programmed differently for automatics and then you have to deal with changing the interior trim to fit stick shift instead of auto selector.Probably like 15 other things i cant think of cuz its like 4 in the morning lol,I would say that unless you are totally in love with you car you should sell your car and use the money you would use to convert the car to buy another one.Or you could always learn to like autos, which i cant blame you if you cant(autos=gay) but anyway good luck, thats my 2 cents or whatever
mtcookson
For the pedal/master cylinder assembly the imprint for it in the firewall is already there. If you look next to the brake master cylinder you can see the imprint where it would go. You would need a brake pedal from a manual trans car and just swap those. ECU wise that won't matter. It will still run with the manual tranny setup. If you were going from manual to auto, that's when you start getting troubles with the ecu. Really... the whole swap wouldn't be too bad if you can find a manual tranny Z at a salvage yard to just start pulling parts that you need. That would make it much easier to pull off. If it were my car... I'd do the swap because I hate auto trannies and don't mind doing that kind of work. It just depends on how much work you want to put into it, because it will take some time. Guest waiting_for_a_z
Well, living in Winnipeg, the car would be garaged for 6 months anyways, and that, I'm sure, would be pleanty of time to pull off the swap. What do you figure a Manual trans would be worth from a junker/write off, and any guess what I could sell the auto trans for once it's out? Anyone ever seen one on Ebay? mtcookson
You can get the manual trannies for around $250-$300 from some places. Try out http://www.car-part.com. They have salvage yards listed in Canada as well.
260DET
Auto TT engine does not have quite as much power as the manual TT engine. Different cams for a start.
Guest waiting_for_a_z
Hum, well it seems the smart thing to do would just be buy a TT with a manual transmission... and fork over the extra 3 grand. Thanks guys. Much appreciated.
