chevy 305 into a 73 240

Recommended Posts

I see the 305/350 dedate is alive and kicking here (as well as in other chevy forms) chevy didn't do us any favors with the little 305, under cammed, to little compression and little valves...

anyway it all comes down to what you intend to use it for and what your resources are (time, money, knowledge)..

Slapping in a take out 305 that you already have, gets you started down the road on the swap..nothing says that later on you can't stuff in a fire breathing 427 cubic inch small block...(provided you again have the resources)...

the 305/350 debate will continue...

It doesn't blow away the gen 1 heads, the lsx series motors utilize a 15 degree valve angle head. A comparable head from GM or Brodix flows better, at 358cfm at .6 lift.

http://www.brodix.com/heads/-15.html

It's not apples to apples as you say. Further the lsx series engines regularly use cams with lifts between .530 and .570 with durations in the 220 to 240 range at .050, which is pretty stout. If we you were to compare like types of cylinder heads, cams, and the like, they'd pretty much be the same.

The nice thing is that with the lsx series of engines, they come "factory stock" with the goodies, and the price that you can acquire one for make them an ever increasingly good deal.

The bonus for the sbc gen 1 is that blocks are available that handle well over 1500HP reliably, not sure that is the case with the lsx engines as of yet.

So, if your looking for inexpensive hp, perhaps the lsx series is the way to go. If your looking to make mondo HP then the LSx series is just as expensive, if not more so than the gen1 sbc IMO.

im not talking about any aftermarket heads here, these are factory as cast heads flowing about the same as those big badass brodix. when you get into porting stock stuff, LS7 heads WITH intake flow 330cfm at .6 lift. completely insane. factory cast iron blocks have seen 4 digit hp reliably. basicly the factory LSx stuff is as good as the aftermarket stuff you can buy for a SBC. the aftermarket stuff for LSx motors is absolutly crazy. thats all i was saying. i agree that you can make a SBC put down great numbers and fairly cheaply.. its just that LSx motors are better. period. they are designed to be better. its like comparing a Gen1 camaro to a Gen4 camaro here. there is no comparison between what they are, they just are both made by the same company and one has 30 years of advances on it.

Ah HA!! The flaw in your arguement; 'Better' is only SUBJECTIVE and not true in all instances. And as for 'designed to be better' well, there are plenty of designs that propose to be just that, but arn't.

Ok, enough already. LSx motors are what they are, sbc's are what they are, same for lt1's, etc. etc. etc. If you like one or the other, great, talk technical or don't post.

Saying LSx's are better is like saying ford is better than chevy. That argument doesn't work here on Hybridz.

Funny, nascar runs the sb2.2, but nobody here has one yet. Maybe I'll be the first.
