Hard Launch Clutch Smoke

Recommended Posts

Well I been spinning my tires all over town. 1st gear... 2nd gear... no problems. The car weighs 2580 and I go 220. So I take it to work to show a buddy. We both pile our fat a@#es in it and head down the road. Launch from a dead in 2nd and the clutch smokes. Now the clutch doesnt owe me anything. I guess the extra 200 lbs of the riders was just enough to tip the scales. Now the question is After it cools will it ever grab again? I guess we will find out. anyway recommendations on a 10.5" 10 spline setup for a 1st gen chevy. Nothing to elaborate. Budget. 330 rwtorque posi 255/50/16s. Muncie 4 speed.

Thanks

Joe

I burnt the clutch once in my nissan tranny, stunk really bad, i drove it around easy for a couple weeks and it seemed to "heal" itself. What i think happened was driving it easy wore off the outer layer of clutch that was burnt/glazed.

Now what i really want to know is why you took off from a stop in second?? does first go by so quick its a waste....

Centerforce dual friction. Jeg's sells the whole kit for under $300. I had one in my Nova with a 468 and I broke transmissions before the clutch slipped.

Your clutch will probably be fine once it cools, provided you didn't cook it at every light until you're lunch break was over.

Yah, a stock clutch can take quite a pounding... I was wialing on mine last summer pretty bad, doing some doh-nuts (yes, I mean 'doh!') and it just let go. Engine reved up, but car slowed down. I could smell the clutch through the tire smoke and was actually backing off when it started to slip. I thought the worst, but after I let it cool down it still worked fine. I can feel a definite diffrence in where it grabs now (pedel comes up further now) but it doesn't slip or chatter. The centerforce is a good choice IMO. I had one in my old Jeep J10 4x4 and BEAT the crap out of it off road, would spin the 33x10.5 mudders on dry pavement, and it never protested.

Yeah Thanks guys.

I have been doing burnouts in 2nd cause they last longer and provide blue smoke wheel spin. Should have used first in hind sight with the extra weight. When launching in first it hits the limiter almost immediately. 2nd provides a little more time to shift.
