cygnusx1
How about these? Super cheap ($61) and get pretty good reviews. Anyone have experience with the Sumitomo HTR-Z. Rumors say (http://www.mn3s.org/tires.html) that it is the old Dunlop D40M2 which was an incredible tire back when. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Sumitomo&tireModel=HTR+Z&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=25WR6HTRZ&fromCompare1=yes&place=
Guest TeamNissan
For $61 each maybe they are worth a try.
cygnusx1
I was going to go with those Sumitomos but then I noticed tirerack has a sale on the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. For $80 each! These are supposedly very sticky tires. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Potenza+RE050A&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=25WR6RE050A&fromCompare1=yes&place=7&speed_rating=Z&speed_rating=W
cygnusx1
Decided not to take a chance on outdated or bargain tires and bought a st of 225/50-16 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD. It was highly recommended to me by a friend that is a national champion autocrosser.

cygnusx1
I have a feeling that third gear rolling burnouts are going to be a thing of the past.
DemonZ
Whatever tire you buy DO NOT buy Goodyear. I have alwyas had bad luck with Goodyears. Feathering, noisy, and vague. I have had three sets on two different cars before I vowed never again. I had the Eagles and the Eagle F1's. Which exact tires did you have, because I want to get these: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/10252/tire-test-the-quick-and-the-tread-page13.html I've always respected Car and Driver for their test, but if you have first hand experience I would reconsider. cygnusx1
Very late follow up. DemonZ, those are the tires I had. They feathered like nobody's business on both my WRX and my Z. Yes alignments were correct. They were so bad that at one point I was looking at prices for new wheel bearings as I though the wheel bearing were worn based on the noise. When I put on the snow tires, the noise went completely away. Another thing you don't get in the review. Look at the channels in the tires. The grooves go from wide to narrow. Gravel gets in those grooves and wedges right into the ends of the grooves. It sounds like you have nails in your tires until you get going about 50mph than they slam into your wheel wells. They also feel very soft-walled in the steering wheel. OTOH, great wet traction. I am absolutely loving my BFG T/A K/D tires. They are silent, very precise, and no tramming. They are very sticky in the dry once they warm up a tiny bit. My only gripe is that they have fairly rounded shoulders which makes them look somewhat less aggressive than they actually are.
