Careless
.... SO... before noticing that both my battery wires were replaced, with BOTH black wires, and one with a teeny tiny red stripe going down one side (coincidentally, the side that faces the floor, so I couldnt see it in my dimly lit garage), I reversed the polarity on my battery by accident, and the black fusible link started to fume as soon as i connected the positive onto the negative terminal. stupid, I know. (i'll go make an entry into the "stupid things you've done" thread later) What is the black fusible link for? Did I kill a relay too, or a fuse? cause I heard something pop inside the cabin. Usually when I used to turn the battery switch on, I would hear a relay click, but now there is no relay clicking, so I'm guessing I popped a fuse, but I found no sign of dead fuses. Any ideas? anyone done the same thing before? Come on... i know it's common!
COZY Z COLE
I take it this is a 76 280Z. I'll start you on this, The black wire is for the alt. and the electronic fuel injection relay. LARRY
Careless
so did i kill the relay, or is the relay not activating because the fusible link is toast? i jumped it for a bit to see if i can get her to fire, but I couldn't. the engine compartment service light comes on as usual with it jumped, but the relay didnt click. is there a fuse or do i need a new relay I take it this is a 76 280Z. cygnusx1
First replace the fusible link then connect the battery correctly. Next see if the car starts. If not, check fuses and relays with a meter. I think I did the same thing once on my 76Z but it was so long ago that I have no idea what happened. It could not have been that bad if I dont remember though.
mario_82_ZXT
If it's EFI you might have done a lot of damage. I've heard of a lot of people frying their ECU just by doing this. Hopefully that won't be your case. Mario
Careless
allz good in the hood. i don't need another EFI relay. it's a good thing too, cause those are 111 US from MSA. BUT, i found out that I have a spare EFI relay too. HAHAHA. it was one of the relays i pulled when i was sorting the wiring from the day i took apart the dash, i was testing different relays I had in a box. WICKED. it starts.. but my plugs are still fouled and she's only chuggin on like 4 cylinders. i gotta see what the problem is there. my guess is that the plugs are just so dingy that i gotta give them a good scrape. sucks though, cause i just bought these NGK BP6. boooooooooo. I guess I could put the old plugs back in to see if it is indeed the plugs that are being unruly. OH, and for the fusible link, I just bent the remaining wire where it burnt, and slipped it through the hole where the spade is on the link pad. Not a permanent solution, but that's why the battery cut off is there. I was only trying to fire it up cause my engine is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cold as hell nowadays. I Think I'm getting some nasty oil seepage through the rings because they arent warm enough to seal properly. I think that's what gunking my plugs from the plug condition chart I'm using. datsunlover
Seams to me that canadian climate is just no good for old Z FI.. I've had two Zs that ran like that, and heard of countless others... I think the salt and cold/hot season cycles really mess with the electrics.. I'd check the TVS, (unless 76 went to a throttle 'position' sensor?) and the injectors.. sometimes they clog or stick wide open...or the little bastard plastic clips that are suposed to hold on to the injectors crack/get gummed up with green death/fall off.. OR.. the AFM is fubar or has a cracked boot going to the intake plenum.. (masive air leak that the ecu can't see cause its AFTER the AFM..) The whole EFI mess is the main reason I switched to SU's on my 75. Nice and simple now! If you're set on keeping the FI, I've got almost the whole system from my 75..(AFM, TVS, Thermotime switch, harness, ecu and transistor ign unit..) I'd sell it all pretty cheep if you want some spare parts..
