Guest Anonymous
I am sectioning the 280 z struts 2 inchs for 10 inch coilovers. My question is : when I do the bumpsteer modifacation to the front cross member by moving the lower control arm mounting hole up 3/4 of an inch. Would it be good practice to also install strut spacers between the streering knuckles and bottom of the strut???????I am not going to do any racing of which many racing rules prohibit strut spacers. Will the handling or performance or any thing benefit from the addition of spacers???? jeromio
When I did this I searched all over and found some people saying to move the pivot point up by 3/4 inch and others saying 1 inch. So I did mine at 15/16. I think 3/4 would be fine though. You also have to modify the control arm. Its "corner" will have to be knocked off so it won't interfere with the cross member. I cut little pie sections out of it and hammered the corner down so it kind of curves downward. I also moved my pivot OUT about 1/4 inch to increase negative camber. But I don't recommend this for a daily driver. Makes the car really darty and very quick steering. Probably excellent for the track (at this point, I wouldn't know ), but not so good for the road. Also, be sure and spot weld in some new washers to the inside of the crossmember. I don't personally see the need for the "bump steer spacers" if you're moving the pivot point. johnc
The bump steer spacers are a "second best" option compared to raising the control arm pivot point. Do one or the other, not both.
Mikelly
Between 3/4 and 7/8 inch would be fine. Bump steer spacers are not needed when you do the first... Also, if you use an adjustable control arm (Like Mine ) You can adjust in or out as much camber as you need, up to 6 degrees, and you won't have to machine the control arm to fit the crossmember. Guest Anonymous
Thanks fellows, Sounds like I will save about $50.00 not using the strut spacers, which was not a wanted option since when you enter "strut spacers" in Search,a mile long list appears of who is banning them on race tracks
