Guest Anonymous
Hey all, I'm getting ready to start removing my stock springs in prep. for the coilovers, and I'm wondering whether I need to put some spring compressors on the stock springs before I start loosening that big nut on the top of the strut. Are the springs compressed on there, meaning, do I need to worry about them flying across my garage when I remove the "big nut"? Thanks, Henry

Tim240z
If you are just removing them, not putting them back, then just hit them with the impact gun on the nut.....there is not that much load on them. I didn't use anything when I pulled everything apart to fit my coilovers. If you plan to pu the springs back, then wrap a couple of pieces of wire around them while they're still compressed on the strut. Otherwise, don't be cheap like me and get some spring compressors. Mike C
If you've got a Harbor Freight in town, don't take any chances. You can get the compressor for less than $20. Mine paid for itself years ago. Option #2 is that Autozone will rent them free. Just leave a credit card # for deposit take the tool back when you are done.
jeromio
Mine were worn way out. And yet, First one, I wrapped wire around the coils, took the nut off with the air wrench and WHIP-ZING-SPOOSH! - I was glad there wasn't anything in the way. Score = spring 1, wire 0. For the rest of the springs, I used spring clamps.
Guest nezzie76
When I took mine off I didn't use a spring compressor. I just stood above the spring and used a wrench with a long handle and took it off that way. They only sprung out maybe a foot. Keep an eye on the nut though because it can really fly out. Also make sure that you do it where it won't hit anything. But I got spring compressors from harbor freight for 7.97. I think they're worth it though if you have one near by.
