How wide is the Z's rear end

Recommended Posts

Tried the search but couldn't find how wide a Z rear axle is. Need the total from wheel mounting to wheel mounting on the brake drums. Trying to get an idea of how much is needed to be taken off my Jag rear end. I'll get new tube axles made for it, but want an idea of how much offset I'll need for my wheels. Don't have my GTO/Z here to measure.

Thanks for any help, Dale

I do believe Scottie-GNZ(member #105) measured his at 64" when he pulled it for the corvette IRS. Don't hold me to that, that may have been his vette IRS measurement. You might try emailing him direct. I'm sure he would be more then willing to answer you.

No, that was the Vette rear end. Scottie worked from the outside in. I'm going the other way. Dayton has the wire wheels I want that are the right offset for the stock Z width. Just need the Jag rear to match that. Dosen't anyone know off hand what the width is?

Dale,

you are correct. My approach was to work from the outside in as I was concerned about where the outside edge of the tire was. One approach is to take the published rear track of 53" and adjust for the stock wheel offset. I have no idea which wheel was used when this measurement was taken. The swastika wheel is 10mm and if you use that as the standard, then I would go with 53.75" hub-to-hub (mounting point, i.e.)

Thanks Scottie, that will get me close enough to get price on axles. The Jag rear is 62" So I'll need about 4and 1/8 inches shorter axles. The lower control arm will need the same. Just checked my gear ratio and I've got 3.36 with posi, overdrive tranny, and will run a taller tire then stock. Sure be in the ball park. Have to find some lighter springs for the four coilovers. Thanks again. Dale

Dale,

I'd love to see some pic's on that when you get the jag in, that was one of the rear's I was looking at. Only problem with the ones I was finding was they were like 2.7x gear ratio's or something that my T56 would have kittens with in 6th. What model has like 3.36's? I think the jag is a good option, nice cradle to hold it and the springs are off the cradle and of course inboard disks. How heavy is it BTW?

Regards,

Lone

Dale, if the Jag IRS is 62" hub-to-hub, then it is 1" narrower than the C4. That sound awfully wide as I just did not envision an XK-E being that wide. You do not have to take off that much if you go with wheels that have a deep offset. I think there was mention that the Jag bolt pattern is the same as GM and I just happen to be getting ready to sell my 4 16x8 Z-28 wheels with 2 255/50-16 tires, CHEAP :D . Those wheels have a 6.125" BS and weigh only 17lbs!!

BTW, those axles are probably not very long since the disc brakes are inboard.

The axles are only 16" long, and it came from a XJ-12 (XJS ?) I've got the GTO/Z rebody and I'm about 3 1/2" wider per side. I've got a post out to speed racer about how much offset he had to use. If I remember right, it was quite a bit. I might not need to cut it down. Nice wheels Scottie but I've got to stick with the Dayton wires. Please keep Mr. Murphy away from me, It might work without cutting! Dale

XJS. That explains the width. Are the hubs and Dayton wheels knock-offs or are you just completely hung up on those wheels? With 3.5" flares, your fender-lip measurement is a tad wider than mine. With the right offset wheels, you would not have to cut it. If you do narrow it, you only have to do the axles and the lower arms. Be certain to maintain the angle os the shocks.
