kickinback88
ok guys, heres the deal. my 71 is a 4 speed car. i like shifting gears. t-56's are expensive. but my 4l60e needs rebuilt. should i convert the z and rebuild my 4L install paddle shifters (ie shrifter), or spring for the t-56? i plan on building the car for some serious power down the road. any opinions? lol, anyone want to trade a t-56 for broken 4L? j/k:burnout:
dr_hunt
Depending on what you call serious power the t56 may or may not be the trans for you. Like you, I like a sports car to have a manual, but at the power that's in the boys z that isn't an option.
pparaska
Another option: G-Force T-5. Lighter than a T-56 and Tremec TKO, shifts great, can handle "600hp and 500lb-ft" Can get a complete one, of have one rebuilt. I have one, it's not in the car yet. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=99499 http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp
wheelman
Isn't the paddle shifter setup and a rebuild of the 4L60E going to run you about the same price as a T56? I agree with Pete, I'm running a stock world class T-5 behind my LT1 and haven't had any problems yet. A G-Force T-5 or a TKO would be a good option. pparaska
Plus, with the correct gearing, the .50 overdrive in many of the T-56s is not needed and just extra weight and complexity.
that240guy
at high power levels, the 4l60 is a pile of crap too. The T56 can handle more power than a stock or even most aftermarket/hipo rebuilt 4l60s. If you are looking for a good tranny and you are drag racing, get a th400 and be done with it. But if you like shifting gears, a T56 or a tremec TKO should be in your future. Pete84
How much does a TKO or G-Force cost?
pparaska
A new G-Force T-5 is $2000, but I'd upgrade to the "9310 Case Hard High Nickel Steel Alloy" mainshaft for another $335. http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/pdfs/PricingT-5.pdf The TKOs are about $2425: http://www.ddperformance.com/t56__6_speed%20transmissions.htm
Guest Firebat
If you get the 4l60e rebuilt, this guy is the best of the best: http://www.cahallperformancetransmissions.com/ He claims he can build 4l60e's that can handle anything you throw at them(for the right price). Its where I'm sending mine off to have it rebuilt, even though my rebuild isn't going to be anything too special.
