Motor runs for a second then starves for fuel

Recommended Posts

Frist of all this is a stock 77 280z and I have had this problem before, or at least similiar symtoms. The car sat for about a month and before that time it started and ran fine. I have already cleaned all the contacts ie TPS, head temp, thermotime ect. I just refurbished the gas tank and injectors so there is NO rust in that or any of the filters. I can run a wire from the postive side of the battery to the fuel pump wire and the car will run just fine, however if I don't use said wire the car will run for roughly 2 seconds or so and die as it is not getting any fuel. Now when I had this problem before the AFM wires were loose and the car's fuel pump wasn't getting the signal to start pumping. That isn't the problem this time, as I have cleaned the wires many times and made darn sure that they are plugged in. Does anyone have anyideas why this car is shutting down soon after start up?

That really doesnt matter if you didnt check for voltage actually making it to the pump:wink: .Pretty much a given i'd say if your saying that it runs when hotwired to the battery.

right it does run when spliced into the wiring for the fuel pump under the seat, we just shoved a loose wire into one of the bullet connectors and ran the other end of the wire to the postive battery terminal. I think all hotwiring it proved was that the pump was good and the wiring downstearm of the splice is good. Also if the car starts up at frist without being hotwired would that show that the pump is getting good voltage?

Im really no expert on this but i thought that upon turning the key the pump runs for just a moment to make starting pressure and then is triggered to stay on by afm once running.Like i said im not sure exactly how its wired but i think the initial run of the pump and the power to it once running are independant.

Basically what im saying is that my money is on the AFM circuit

Solved the problem, I pulled the afm after checking continuallity at the starter and fuel pump wires, they all checked out. After pulling the AFM i noticed that the "angel" switch that kicks the fuel pump on after the engine starts wasn't making contact with the pin next to it. So after some creative bending I made said contact, contact again where it was supposed to and wala the car starts and runs great, thanks for everyone's help!
