I had never heard them referred to as anything other than "freeze plugs" even though I knew what they were, and what they were for... and I never understood why they were called freeze plugs. It's like 'The Kings' English' and 'Street Vernacular'.... Once you have gotten used to being sloven about terminology, everything else falls downhill in quick order.
