well guys I just picked up a 75 280Z today...

to my eye there is no rust at all (except the passenger floor board has a little surfacing rust, but I was planning on welding flat new floor boards in after I cut the old out)

Is there anything I should be looking for, ie; specific spots that are common rust accumulators on the Z's?

The frame rails looked good and also the spare wheel storage area was rust free.

On to the actual point of the thread.

I have another L28 motor and a P90 head as spares.

Both L28 are NA of course.. however I would like to boost one of them and am wanting around 450Hp to the wheels.

I have done searching on the forum for the last few days and have a read a alot. I would like a no BS point to point options set from the guys that have been doing this.

-what do I need for tuning and management

-I understand I need a different tranny/differential.. I would like a Z32 tranny with a R200 diferential...( I understand I need modification to the Bell housing)

- along with this what modification to the axles will need to be made to handle the power level I want?

-I would like to stroke the motor to at least a 3.0, is their a kit or what would be the logical way of doing this?

-what would be a the appropriate head for this type of job?

-what modification would be needed to the NA block to prepare it for a turbo?

-is there a turbo cam that someone would reccomend?

-Is there a Clutch that would be Ideal for this setup?

I have read alot and am no stranger to tuning cars this is just a new project which I see alot of potential in.

p90 is the usual head of choice with turbo

theres a company selling the z32 tranny swap kit

the stock ecu afm is good for 300 hp tops

r200 axles and rear will handle just about anything

msa sells turbo cams I have no experience with the turbo cams but have been very happy with their N/A cams

I am no stranger to automotive forums I am on quite a few, however, I am new to classic cars so throw me a bone guys and keep the suggestions and facts coming.

76s30 thank you for your kindness I can only hope that the following posters will display your helpfulness.

hmm... A lot of people have been complaining about not being to find much L6 info. I think that all of the great information is buried in someone else's thread. Maybe we should make a L6 modification FAQ.

bchappy:

There is a book out there that you should buy. It will give you most of the basics.

"How to Modify your Nissan & Datsun OHC engine"

by Frank Honsowetz

Nissan part# 99996-M8012

That will get you fairly knowledgable about L6 engines.

For 450hp you would want forged pistons. That means going to custom piston companies like ross, JE, Arias or one of the others to have custom pistons made.

The crank and rods of all Nissan L-series engines are forged so they can definitely hold plenty of power.

Also be sure to get the turbo oil pump to replace the N/A pump.

Hopefully that will get you started.

Good luck!!

Dan

BTW I can get most any L series part in a junkyard including a stroker crankshaft and the proper rods for it.

Ive already fallen in love!

Just driving the thing in 105 degrees with the windows down I was smiling all the way home.

there is pretty much no interior in the car and the seats are cracked and all I was still having a ball.

Ive always wanted one, now my other monster /DD can be layed off for a while its becoming to much as something to drive everyday.
