Guest pyro926
Hello all, I am 48 hrs from pulling the motor/tranny from a late 60's chevy truck. I have ordered the JTR conversion manual, but don't have time to wait for it to arrive before I pull the motor. Any tips on what to save, how to do it, any short cuts, what to do and NOT to do......Any info from you z gurus would be great. I did some searching and didn't find anything. I don't want to waste anyone's time, but I also don't want to repeat anyone else's mistakes. Thanks for any info you are willing to impart, Gabe. wheelman
Grab everything you can. Later you'll have time to sort though it and either toss or sell the parts you don't use. Keep all of it until the swap is in and running. BTW: Where in Washington do you live? Wheelman

Do what wheelman said and tag all your wires so you know where they go when you put it in the Z. Trust me on this one, you will NOT remember. Even if you don't know what a wire does at least number it and the place where it came from. Also take as many pictures as you can so you can reference them on reinstall. ckelly78z
Don't worry about labeling things in their proper names, just label it so YOU can understand where it goes. If I am pulling a motor to re-install later in the same car, I number items 1,2,3, etc... so all I have to do is match up numbers later. I'll have to disagree, if you write little cute diagrams and only makes sense to you labels you will forget what you were referring to and possibly be worse off than before especially if it's going to be days or weeks before you're going to complete whatever transition. Be as descriptive as possible, label the wires AND write on a pad a description and where the wire went. Try to keep everything you can intact. Disconnect hoses from power steering pump at the gear box so you can have those hoses. Take everything with you, A/C brackets/compressor even if you're not planning on using them, fan, shroud, radiator if you can manage, hoses, engine mounts (unbolt from perches instead of at engine, or instead of removing pin bolts and only taking half of the "mount"), air cleaner box and ducting out of the engine bay, EVERYTHING! Take your time and look at what you're about to do before you do it. Keep the tranny to engine bolts too..... etc etc.
ckelly78z
And for God's sake, re-install the bolts back in the holes they came from when possible so they aren't lost or used in the wrong area. When I mentioned "only makes sense to you" labels, I had nothing cute or no diagrams in mind. I was thinking that I might label some vacumn hose as "under throttle body" or maybe "left", "middle", "right" when connectors are in a row. No one but me will be fooling with my car, so these make sense to me.
strotter
Keep the donor vehicle as long as possible. There are many items you may not think you need, but may change your mind about during the swap. When you're done with the swap, throw the l6 and tranny in the bed and sell it as "pickup with 6-cylinder, needs work".
