Guest Anonymous
How hard is it to change all the brake pads?? I will have access to a lift and ANY tool I would need. I'm pretty sure I can do it, I just would like some basic instructions. I thing I'm going to order the semi-metallic pads from MSA. oh yeah, this is an '83 280 ZX
Mike C
The ZX has a floating caliper in the front with a single piston. This is really easy. Just take the tires off and compress piston with a c-clamp. Remove caliper, put in new pads and bolt back up. I'm not sure if the rear is a screw piston, but if so it will require a tool to "screw" the piston back in before putting the new pads. This screw effect is how the parking brake works on a lot of rear disc cars with integral parking brake.
Lockjaw
The rear is a screw in piston, I found that out the hard way after trying to compress it with a c clamp. I was cussing that one too. I had never seen a caliper so hard to compress before. On the front ones, and the back ones, you should get a manual because it will have pictures of what I am telling you, although Mike probably hit on it. There are two parts of the caliper. One that is bolted to the suspension assembly, and then the caliper is bolted to that. Basically there are two small 12mm bolts holding the caliper to this other part. Remove one bolt, and rotate the caliper back, and you can compress the piston. Then you can see how the pads are in there, and pull them out and replace. When you are done, rotate the caliper back and insert the bolt and tighten and you are done. Be sure to get some disc brake quiet spray and liberally coat the backs of the pads and allow it to get sticky before putting the pads in there. You could also get some KVR carbon fiber pads from Ross C. I put some in my wife's altima, and they are pretty tame under light pedal, but when you hit them, the car stops immediately. Ross is here. http://www.modern-motorsports.com/ He can get you those KVR's for probably less than the pads MSA is selling, and I bet these are better. He could tell you more. Guest Anonymous
I already ordered them, because I had to have them Saturday so I could do it Monday morning. I'm doing it at an Auto Tech class, and we have a modified schedual that day and don't go to that class. The teacher will be there helping me(I believe), if not, I have a Haynes, and these instructions you gave me. The pads were $64.88 with shipping for all 8. MSA has those, and some racing ones for $275(all 8). What kind of price do you think I could have got those from Ross C for?
