Guest ZShaker79
Can any one help me with the problem I am having with my 1979 zx. The cars fuel pump cut out on me when I turn the key on, I check the fuel pump with 12volt by pass it works that way. I check the spark, I am getting spark, I have compression. When I by passed the fuel pump the car still doesn't want to start. Is there any quick way to get this car running. I appreciate the help. Guest ZShaker79
Please explain why the fuel pump is not running when the key is turned on. But if I run jumper wires direct from battery to the fuel pump the pump runs, but the car doesn't. Also I do have a new fuel filter installed correctly and a brand new battery. I did check the cold start valve, thats o.k.
xenonxiii
Check for fuel pressure at the Fuel Rail. If the filter is clogged there will not be the required pressure to inject fuel into the cyl and the car will not run. Most likely this will be the problem. Also read this. It will help you understand the fuel system better. http://www.xenonz31.com/s130/style/280zfuelinjectionbook.pdf

I did check the cold start valve, thats o.k. as a motor works harder it will draw more amps basically if you have a plugged line filter etc etc your pupm has top work harder. id be willing to bet you blew a fuse. think of it this way if you walk a mile its easy right now if you try to run full sprint for a mile it will be alot harder on you thats what your fuel pump is doing. Also keep in mind the pressure may be there but the volume might not be check the recovery time(when you get it running let it go to an idle then hit the perge on the fuel rail the car should putter a bit but the fuel pump should catch it up quick if it dies the pump is going bad on you. i have seen this a couple of times when my fathers shop has got cars in noone else can fix
Guest ZShaker79
Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate all the help I can get. Can you tell me where the fuse is located for the fuel pump. I know there is the fuse box on the passengers kick panel, but I didn't see where it would say pump on the fuse cover. Chemicalblue
It may be a fuse link under the hood. If I remember correctly there are 3 relays involved in supplying the fuel pump with power in sequence. Get a factory service manual, it will save you allot of time. VinhZXT
The pump doesn't stay on when you turn the key on. If you hard wired the pump and the pump runs but the car doesn't start obviously it's not the pump. Go back 3 posts and look at Xenon's post if you don't want to waste time. If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge to connect to the fuel line after the fuel filter than you can just disconnect that supply fuel line and stick it into a bottle. Hardwire the fuel pump to see you get a strong flow of fuel coming out. If you do then try it by turning the key to ON. When you turn the key to ON it primes the fuel pump and you should get a steady stream of fuel coming out. If you don't get steady fuel flow in either case then check the inside of your fuel tank. I bet ya it got a crab load of rusts in there. GL
