couple of questions.

Recommended Posts

I'm getting ready to do my V8 swap. Got all the donor gear. But my question is, what are you all using for rear ends. My plans will have the car putting down over 500. I know that the factory rear end won't handle that. What rear ends are you all using, and does it require a lot of fabrication? Or is there a bolt on solution?

I'm going to be using an automatic transmission (4L60) to start with after the basic engine swap (92 LT1) mated to a slap shifter.

I eventually will probably go with an aftermarket race tranny. But I don't have much of any knowledge of rear ends.

Thanks.

Well first off, nice response. Thanks!

Even though I completely understand the point being made, you should look up the word etiquette in the dictionary. Or maybe tact. Ahh....there's that search function again. :icon45:

LOL. C'mon now.

I have actually been doing searches all morning about transmissions and rear ends and such. Anything trying to get a hit on what I'm looking for. Sorry if I didn't specify that.

You would be amazed at how many threads there are on here pertaining to minor details....yet I didn't come across anything solid to get me started.

All I've been able to find is people ranting and raving about the T-5 vs the T56....gas economy, cruise RPM's, weight and all that. It seams that every thread I find with the word rear end in it, only talks about gear ratios and transmissions. Literally giving me next to nothing along the lines of useful base information. I don't care about gear ratios at this point, because I still am not sure what rear end to use. I'll worry about the ratios after I figure out what model line to go with.

I'm just trying to find out a real solid rear end that's been tested and used by high output Z's. As well as to find out if there is major fab involved, or if it's a pretty simple process...ya know, what am I facing?

IRS, if properly set up has addvantages for road racing and rought roads, for drag racing and high shock loads a live rear can be far stronger and easier to tune and on smooth roads you loose little if anything, keep in mind once you get into the under 10 second area IRS is not allowed at some tracks
