drwharton85
just wondering what you guys think on the subjects? which would you choose why and why not? which would provide most all around perfomance and efficiency for everyday driving & weekend racer? mtcookson
Personally, I would always take a turbo over a supercharger. They're much more efficient which means more power. Centrifugal (Vortech, ProCharger, etc.) - high efficiency but is limited to linear boost, which means no peak boost till redline and therefore only high peak numbers. Roots (Eaton) - terribly inefficient but extremely reliable. instant boost, sometimes falling off at redline if the unit is on the small side. The roots is technically not even a compressor but actually a blower... it literally pushes the air into the intake manifold so fast that the air compresses in the intake. Screws (Whipple, Lysholm) - my personal favorite supercharger and the only one i would consider over a turbo. very efficient, instant boost, tons of power... but still suffers from parasitic losses that all s/c's have (due to being driven off of the crank itself). I don't believe these are quite as reliable as a roots but still a better choice for making power. Plus, they sound wicked. Do a video search for Kenne Bell Cobras and you'll see what I mean. (Original Whipples were really just a Lysholm supercharger but the new ones are supposed to be even more efficient than the Lysholms) I still prefer the sound of a turbo myself and the overall higher efficiency. They're just superior in my opinion.

240hoke
The Vortec supercharger kit is very compact and would be a bolt on affair in our S30's. It also produces very good numbers (capable of way more then the stock block can handle). I think a supercharger is a good option for this motor depends on you overall powergoals. it would be sick for a daily driver as power would be very quick... Everyone is looking at this from a money and build dont matter standpoint. If this VQ you are putting in is stock it wont really need the use of a 8PSI turbo setup when you can make 8PSI with a SC and not really rob yourself of enought power to notice it... The VQ is a stout engine ive done a few with the turbonetics T3/T04B setup (not fun) and we had great success as well as a huge power boost but ive also done a few vortech setups and been equally impressed.. On the other hand: If your gonna get into the block and replace the rods and pistons by all means drop the compression to 9:1 and boost the ISH out of it turbo style! on a built block the turbo is gonna outperform the SC anyday of the week... GL with the setup regardless of what you use... Let me also mention that 250 HP isnt bad for a stock 3.5, and a definate upgrade from any stock 70's/80's Z engine (aside from a RB20).. -PSi
2003z
my firsthand experience. I had a 350z with a stillen (magnuson M62) stage 3 supercharger I also installed 2 Vortech superchargers on friends cars, a 350z and a G35. I really, really liked the performance of the stillen, although the total output and performance potential was a lot lower than the others. I got about 340 rwhp while they got around 420, but I had 90% of my max torque and hp at 1800 rpms. It was perfect for track days. So, I would say that for a daily driver, track day type car, I would go with the maggie again. For drag racing or just bragging rights, the centrifugal or turbos. The maggies just aren't real upgradeable. All of this being said, I just bought a Vortech kit for my C6, but thats because 1. it was on sale in a group buy for an unbelievable price, and 2. my 240z is my track car, or will be as soon as its running properly again.
