help me make a suspension decision

What is the best way to set up suspenison for a v8. Eventually I would like to autocross it. I've got all sorts opinions but few from Z specialist. Some say strut front ends will never handel well, others say coil overs with camber plates, others say coil overs wont accomplish much for the money. Also what strut / spring combo do you guys recomend, and should the springs in the front be heaver? by how much? Anywone have any experience with motorsports coil overs?? Thanks for your help

You have two expert suspension members here: SCCA (Mike) and Ross Corrigan who can beat about any deal than any vendor and give you advise thru the modification process. They have forgot more about suspensions than any call taker working for some impersonal vendor will ever learn

MSA has never been known for their deals. I would be very happy to buy from people who know what they are selling. So tell me what do I want to buy? coil overs? I don't know much about suspension but I have the suspision that coil overs will not make my car handel any better, save the fact that you have ajustable ride heidth, and the camber plates, but I don't think you have to go to coil overs to use camber plates. Are these camber plates something I really want to buy? Thanks

Well, some feel that coilovers are overkill on the street. I dunno, I like them. You have a bunch of rate choices, you can adjust corner weights, ride height. On a daily driven car they might get dirt between the sleeve and spring perch and jam.

 

You don't really need camber plates on the street. Slot the strut towers to get around .75 to 1 degree of negative camber. Use the stock rubber isolators with the proper top spring mount and you'll have a quiet ride.

As has already been said, there are the named experts here with their proven products. So I'll keep out of it, except to say that the original type strut suspension can be made to work very, very well at a reasonable cost. I have seen lots of highly competitive track and rally Z cars and they all retain the original type strut suspension.

Thank you gentlemen for the advice, I'm wondering about the possibillity of custom springs instead of coilovers? The car sits right now where I want it to, but the springs are worn out, the struts are worn out, and I'm not sure where to go for spring advice? What brands are proven? Tokiko, Eibach, ????? (sorry if I mispelled them. I appreciate all your advice.

For autocross with a V8 you will need new, heavier springs so the ride height will almost certainly change. Coilovers therefore are a good investment as are adjustable shocks. Spring rates with a V8? Dunno, but with my probably lighter engined car I'm happy with 250 pound linear springs on the front. With adjustable Koni shocks set at the softest setting it rides quite ok on the road, firm but not rough.
