L28 swap into a 260Z

I want to exchange the actual engine (it is a L24, with SU-Carburators) with a L28 of a 280ZX with electronic ignition and fuel-injection (Bosch K-Jetronic).

To change the engine is not the issue, the problem is to "add" the necessary electrical wireing and perhaps also the fuel-pump (that has also to be exchanged, I think so because of fuel-pressure).

Does one have a documentation about the electrical wireing (that one does understand who is not a prof)? or a documentation about the whole swap?

Should find the bible there, I'm currently fitting mine out with an L28 but with an aftermarket ECU http://www.emeraldm3d.com/ made in the UK, so far very simple, especially when your starting from scratch and not trying to use a bit of this and that, the emerald manual for download also has a basic schematic layout for a EFi system either with or without (as I'm doing) a distributor.

You'll need an EFI pump and swirl pot for fuel supply.

All the best

Thanks,

I've got the complete engine harness and an ECU. But I do not know how to connect the new harness to the existing one of my car. So I am also wondering if I have to change the fuel lines because of size and pressure.

I will check also z atlantic.

Thanks Nigel,

I followed the link but I did not found a documentation how to connect the engine harness to the existing harness of the car (There are a few electric cabless which have to be connected to "something" somewhere. I try to find someone with a 280ZX and will shoot a few pictures, I think this is the easiest way.

Remember that the l24 and l26 (if the heads are original) Have square exhaust ports and most l28s have round ports. So you'll want to find the correct header. I bolted a round port header onto a square port head and boy is it loud and leaky.

Square port header onto round port head isnt as bad.

Linuxon: go to http://carfiche.com/manuals022/cars/ and find the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for the 280ZX. That should include the wiring diagrams needed. That, combined with the reading material linked above (both the atlantic Z club page, and the aftermarket ECU page) should help inform you. Basically, you have the wiring from the ZX that runs ALL the EFI and ignition systems, and the "hard part" you are trying to overcome is how to plug power into all of that; the wiring diagrams available in the FSM should take care of you.

Hello Daeron,

thanks for the link. Now I should have all the information that I need. As you mentioned, I have all the hard stuff, my problem is the unexperience and the electrical part. But now I think I can start to plan the swap.

Thanks,
