mike240zt
I currently have my 240 struts fully disassembled ready to be sandblasted and painted. I understand 280 stub axles are stronger and was thinkin about putting those back in. Can anyone tell me why i might want to stick with the 240 axles. I know it makes for a bolt on cv axle swap from the zx but then the axle would be the weak link wouldn't it? Any other reason to keep the 240 stub axle anyone? Guest Anonymous
Ross C has an adapter to mate 280Z stub axles to CV axles. Replace now with 280 stubs and upgrade to LSD and cv down the road.
johnc
It depends on what you're doing with the car. Although I tend to hang with the road racing crowd and that might limit my experience, the most common stub axle failure is flange separation from the axle. This is caused by fatigue failure starting from a stress riser at the fusion weld. The fatigue load is the lateral loads imposed on the flange from racing wheels and sticky track tires. If you are doing a lot of track or autocross stuff then you'll benefit from the 280Z sub axles (27 spline). I also assume that you'll benefit if you drag race frequently and do hard launches. For a street car, there's probably no benefit to the change.
Wagz
Are the 240 and 280 stubs interchangeable? I have a damaged stub on my 240 and was looking for a 240 replacement. If I can use 280 stubs, I'll go that route and be ready for the CV upgrade later.
johnc
They are interchangeable if you use the corresponding companion flange.
mike240zt
thanks for the responses guys, i have an r200 to go in so with the 280 stub axles already in i'm ready for a simple swapout later should i get a hold of an 87lsd. using the cv adpter plate with the 280 stub axle would be better as well then i wont have to change the inner seal. also another confirmation of b type sleeves in my strut housings with no copper washers and will re-use with 280 stubs. have all my components sandblasted and will be painting soon. engine compartment, underside and inside are all painted just have to finish bodywork and assemble. http://www.angelfire.com/extreme3/datsun240z/ thats mine and my brothers website hasnt been updated in quite a while but will work on that soon(hopefully) Thx again for responses
