Rear Wheel Hop When Cornering

Recommended Posts

Just installed new springs 180 lbs/in front and 225 lbs/in rear with new Tokico performance shocks in our 350 sbc 240Z. When taking a corner at high speed the rear wheels hop to the outside of the turn. Is this a weight distribution problem or are the rear springs too stiff? The car rides really well otherwise.

I also have a problem with the rear wheels locking on hard braking. Installing a proportioning valve helped with the wheel lock up.

Thanks

We need more information then this:

1. What are you doing with the throttle before and while this happens? off, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full?

2. What are you doing with the brakes when before and while this happens? off, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full?

3. What are you doing with the steering before and while this happens?

4. When does this happen? Corner entry, mid-corner, corner exit?

5. What tire pressures are you running?

6. What kind of condition are your tires?

7. What brand and model of tires?

8. Do you have an open, limited slip, or welded rear diff?

9. Is the road surface bumpy?

10. Are the Tokicos adjustable? If so, what settings front and rear?

That's a good list to start with.

What size/profile tires are you running? The height of the sidewall makes a big difference in wheel-hop when cornering. Now that your suspension isn't giving in like it used to when cornering, it could be your tires' turn to give in. I noticed a world of difference on my car when I went from 195-70-14 to 195-60-14. No more hopping in corners. It just holds up till the breaking point and finally gives in at a much higher speed than before, in a smooth slide instead of a hop.

Just a thought.
