some speedshops make me crazy

Recommended Posts

now I usually buy gaskets in bulk packs, and mostly for GM and MOPAR engines because thats what I generally build and work on, and when you build and work on LOTS of cars you get a general idea as to prices, comon part numbers, and cures and causes of comon problems.

I was assembling a 496 BBC for a friend and his valve cover gaskets need replacing on the valve covers he has, I checked stock and I was out!

I was going to do some (HONEY DO!) stuff and I stopped by a local speed shop, I picked up a set of valve cover gaskets and walk over to the counter and ask the price....

without blinking he says $106 a pair, I looked at him and said...no not the VALVE COVERS.. JUST the gaskets! he repeated $106, ........I told him, well I can see why theres darn few customers and walked out

look heres a sellection, most are under $25 all are UNDER $50 a set, am I the only one that thinks the guys insanely gready, and deals with jerks like this??

NO, you're NOT the only one who would never frequent a place that wants to make a killing of the backs of each and every one of their customers....And I get very vocal on the regional scene as to which are ripoffs and which are reasonable to all whom will listen. As you know, Grump...there are lots of them out there...usually, what goes around, comes around...I sincerely hope that is sooner than later. :o)

One of my friends burned out a msd 6a box on his camaro that runs high 10's two nights before a drag race. I told him that he could just use mine and get a new one off summit or ebay. But nope he went to a local speedshop and spent 220 on a 6a. I just about fell over when he told me that and then told him that I got a new digital 6 for 275. This will really make you laugh. He went to a different speed shop to have the battery placed in the rear of the car, put new adjustable shocks and a-arms in (already paid for), and a dual exhaust (I think it was 2.5") on his camaro. The guy told him around 1200 and he said just do it. Three weeks later he gets a call that its done and he goes down and just the secretary is there and not the mechanic/owner. So he goes and asks how much is it and she said 2500. He was pissed but didn't flip out on the secretary and just paid it. The best part is is that the exhaust doesn't even have an "h" or "x" pipe and it was CRUSHED BENT.

I felt like telling him that I would've did it for 2000. It's guys like him that keep them in business. haha.

Sounds like more money than patience. For some people it's worth it to just get something done and not have to wait for the UPS man or a slow shop, I guess.
