Gas in tank, pump is running, no gas to Carb?

A buddy helped me make some minor adjustments to the exhaust today so I could finally hang most of it and tune the Z to get her running. Car has been sitting for 11 months untouched almost untill today.

SO i go to start her and she turns and turns.

Check coil wire, it was unplugged. Plugged it in same thing. Turns and turns.

Recheck everything and nothing looks out of place. Turn the ignition on and check the fuel psi, guage reads 0. Check the tank, fuel is barely covering the pick up, so i add about a gallon and a half or less, pick up is now completely covered. Try again

Still nothing.

Put a splash into the top of the carb, she fires right up! ARG

Pull the rubber line from the hard supply line and the guage, all is clear, no blockage or anything. Pull a 6' extension and put it on the hard supply line, turn on the ignition and I can feel air being pushed but no gas. I drop it in a gas can and let it run for over a minute and nothing. Checked all the fuel line connections, don't see any leaks or anything.

I did notice that after the first couple of attemps, their was a large vacume built up in the fuel cell but other than that, everything seems fine.

Last xmas when we got this think running for the very first time, we had no issues with the pump or supply lines.

I'm hoping this is something stupidly simple...

any ideas fellas?

Holly Red pump

Braded line from Cell to filter to pump to hard line, then short rubber line from hard line to carb.

Sounds like you may be air locked. If you have a pocket of air trapped between to liquids, the liquid that the pump is trying to move will not move. Air is compressible, gas is not. What is happening is the air trapped between the pump and somewhere downstream of the pump is being compressed.

Try disconnecting all the fuel lines from the pump to the regulator and the regulator return line back to the tank. Blow through the lines and make sure that no gas is trapped in the lines.

You should then try to prime the pump by pouring some gas down the line from the carb to the pump, or you can turn on the pump and pump gas until it starts to leak from the connection at the carb.

The pump will also pump gas if you do not prime the discharge end, but the priming step mentioned above will help to ensure that you do not trap any more air in the line.

I just read this statement. Is your cell vented properly? If not, gas will not flow very well if at all.

well there is a vent AN fitting on the top, the first time I tried to start it, I still had the little red protector cap on top, that may have kept air from pulling in. I haven't plumbed that vent as of yet.

I though i pulled it off, but i may have stuck it right back on. I'll make sure to remove next time i play.

Pulled the pump and the lines feeding the pump, not a drop of gas in any of them, blew air through line from the engine bay back and very little if any came out, really only enough to wet the end of the line sitting in the catch can.

I'll put everything backtogether Friday and see what happens. I am going to lower the pump a bit below the tank bottom, I think I'm pretty close anyway but we'll see what that does.

I am assuming you are using an external fuel pump. Two things can cause this. First make sure the pump is wired correctly as revering the polarity of the wires will cause the pump to run backwards. Also make sure the pick up and disharge line are on the correct sides of the pump. This should fix your problem. If they are wired and connected propery, it is probably a defective pump

Both of those were correct, the car started right up a year ago.

Hopefully I'll get it all back together today or tomorrow and re-try.

well, no one guessed it, or could have. I never would have imagined that the pick up tube would have dropped off the bulkhead fitting!!! It was just lying in the bottom of the tank!

The tank is an aluminum RCI fuel cell, 15 gallon i think. Has two bulkhead fittings, one vent and one fuel supply.

So I dropped the tank, pulled the filler neck and supply fitting off and removed the pickup tubing from the bottom of the tank. I cut the mangled end of the tube off and applied a bit of grease to the tube and fitting and re-installed. Once pushed all the way one, the barbs on the fitting would not let me pull it off again, but i cinched a tie wrap around it just in case.

Put everything back together and when I turned on the ignition I could hear the fuel hit the pump, checked the guage and had pressure. I finished tightening all the exhaust bolts at all the joints and fired her up. She went to temp fan kicked on and stayed right at 190-200 so i guess i fixed some of my initial electical issues.

Still need to tune her up, looked like she was running lean and wouldn't Idle. I'll start a new thread on that stuff later. I'm just so pumped that it's coming together!!
