Brake rotor sizes...

I'm in the process of doing the 4x4 upgrade , and I was wondering (How many time have you read that?)... anyway... Whats the bigest brake rotor nissan makes with 4 or (5 lugs... I guess I can drill) that I can use?... I know I'll have to fab a new caliper mount, and maybe use a spacer, but it'll be that much more stopping force.

The reason I ask is that I have done the search, and I've gotten some conflicting info... I've seen some things about 11.4", 10.8", and 10.25" rotors, but I cant find any year/model info... I take that back... the 84-85 non turbo 300zx's had the 10.8 vented rotors. (I think thats right), but what other options are there?

thanks,

Max

The 240-280 uses the 10.8" rotor solid rotor, the 84-85 4 lug 300ZX is 11" vented. Don't know about other choices, but the 4 lug 300zx rotor turned down to 10.8" using the 280ZX calipers is what I have planned for my front ala Blueovalz. I already have them turned. I have Ross' brackets for the rear to use the 11 3/8 4 lug 300zx rear rotor and 240sx calipers for the back.

This subject of the 300ZX may need to be reviewed. I need to be at the house to measure them but I believe the 300ZX (4 lug) are 10.8" in diameter from the factory. And as Mike said, they need to be turned down a small amount on the OD to get them to fit inside a 280ZX front caliper. I believe the 10.25" rotors were the 280ZX front rotors which were smaller than the Z generation rotors, but were vented. Then I believe the later 300ZX turbos (5 lug) had even larger diameter rotors (11.4") but do not have any info on them. Simplicity/cost options are wide, starting from this fairly simple OEM swap in Mike's post to another member's nice 12+" 4 puck, who happens to be named Mike too) aftermarket swap. It all depends on how much you brake you need (or think you need). Increasing the caliper piston size over the OEM dual piston calipers will require a larger bore MC to keep the OEM "feel" at the pedal. The '80 model ZX master cylinder will work for this also.

I was under the impression that the larger rotor went up front, and the smaller one went to the rear...

So in short, use both front and rear rotors from a 84/85 na 300zx ? Make brackets (or turn rotor down), spacers, and that should be it...

In my rush to get the parts with out doing a thorough job of research, I got the wrong calipers (s12+8 not the s12w)... but I did get the "good" brake master cylinder.

Many cars use a larger rotor in back. Swept area (even though the rotor is larger) may be smaller because of the narrower friction surface, narrower pads, and/or smaller diameter piston. Many use a none vented in back and a vented in front. Any or all of these variations will lead to a less effective stopping force at the rear than at the front, even with the larger diameter rear rotor. Many rear Z disc conversions also use the 280ZX (later models) rear rotor as well as the 240SX rear rotors.

Terry, Well, after seeing your supra brake upgrade, I went ahead and did that...Thanks for the info! I bored the center hole to 81MM, Did the 4 hole 103 lug pattern, but I went up to a 12.7mm bolt hole in the rotor, and re-tapped the hub to a 12 x 1.75 thread size for a little more clamping force. This weekend I'm going to find some front calipers, and design a bracker to hole it in place. I thought at first I would use the Toyota 4runner calipers, but I think they would be a bit small for the width of the rotor... What about your rear brakes? Why didn't you use the supra rotors, and calipers?
