Quickshift4
Howdy all, I've been cruising this site for quite some time now and finally bought myself a 1972 240z to join in on the fun Now for the problem: When I shift driving normally and let the clutch out to engage, the tranny seems to knock or hit or something when it first engages. Kinda like it slaps into gear. If I'm driving it like a race car I don't have the problem, or at least don't notice the problem at all. 5th gear seems to be worse then the first 4. Any ideas what could be going wrong? The tranny is from a 280z the previous owner told me, but as for which year etc. I'm not sure =

trwebb26
First place I'd loook is the strap that goes over the nose of the diff.

Quickshift4
Update: I got under the Z and checked out all of the scenarios, and didn't find a whole lot of a problem except a little bit of play from the stubshafts into the differential. the play seemed to come from inside too. think this could be the problem? ezzzzzzz
The knocking could be from the diff nose lifting during acceleration. It could also be from worn out bushings in the mustache bar. Neither can easily be discerned from a visual check. Play in the stub axles is common on the early diffs.
Quickshift4
Alright thanks a lot. I will definitely look into the bushing on the mustache bar and do a little more "wiggling" testing.
