Guest Anonymous
i currently have a professionally built 406sb between 350-400 HP, i am in the process of installing in my 260Z. i have a powerglide (2 speed), and a Turbo350 lying in wait but now i am considering a 5 or 6 speed manual tranny. my car was an automatic stock early 260 . what do you guys recommend. I have a lot of patience and a nice selection of tools for fabrication work. is the 6 speed really worth the effort and costs. i spent $2800 on the motor so why stop now? thanks
Guest Locutus
I am also installing a 6 speed. After doing some calculations, and riding in a friends car, I think the RPMs would be way to high with out the 6 speed for daily driving. Its also a personal choice. I personally like the feel of being in complete control. I have always love standards, and even my daily trooper now is an automatic, I still find myself going for the clutch everymorning. Old habits die hard If you don't decide on the 6 speed, I would say the minimum if you wish to make it a daily driver would be a overdrive tranny. There are several types the 700R4, the 2004r and some places even adapt a Ford AOD to a chevy motor by using a special bell housing. Things to consider about overdrive is the TV cable or kickdown cable as it is sometimes called. It must be adjusted correctly or your tranny is toast in a few hundred miles. Also you must wire the lockup correctly or it can also cause problems. There are several guys that have used the 700r4 and a few that have had problems too. thats my 2 cents Mike
John Scott
Chaz, for simplicity the turbo 350 is hard to beat. It can be built to take really high hp applications and it doesn't take an arm and leg to buy/ build. If you want the cruise-ablity of an overdrive then you need to decide if you want to control your shifts or have it done for you. The later T56s are really strong, I wish I had one! As for the 700, if it is set up right, makes a great trans. 3.06 1st and a .7 4th. Want one? John Scott
Mikelly
Based on Myron's debacles with the 700R4, I would say it is a toss up for cost. I used to think the $2000 price tag of the T56 was a show stopper, but getting a 700R4 setup to handle the 400HLP range might just put it in the same ball park as the T56, certainly within $400.... Guess it depends on if you want to row your own gears or have it done for you... I do have a 700R4 in the truck and I LOVE IT!!!!!!
