John Scott Posted April 18, 2000 Share Posted April 18, 2000 Brian, I've been hashing over the same dilema. I've been told to avoid the T5 unless its a World Class T5. I believe these came out in 88 up. I've been told the older trans had softer gears and smaller bearings. I've decided to go with the weight savings and run one. I found a guy who is going to build me one NEW (case, gears, everything, choice of gears, tailshafts etc.) with the countershaft bearing support. I've been giving all my engine information along with some dyno tests of similar engines. He thinks it will hold fine. I can give you his name, but its not going to be as cheap as a used one by far. www.gearzone.net/t5.htm If you are planning a really high hp project and/or ever plan on running slicks and powershifting, I'd save for the extra expense ($2300 new!)and reliability of the T56. Mikelly Posted April 18, 2000 Share Posted April 18, 2000 I would say that if you plan to keep it at the numbers you are shooting for, a world class T5 would be a good option. The T56 is way expensive and DO NOT buy a TREMEC until unless you drive a car with one in it first. Make sure you can live with the notchy and difficult shifting...I found it almost impossible to shift accurately.... However, if you shoot for 400HP and larger torque numbers, a T56 will be your only cost effective and maintenance free choice! 94-97 T56s were rated at 450#ft of torque! Guest Locutus Posted April 18, 2000 Share Posted April 18, 2000 My brother went thru 2 Tremec 5 speeds, and all he was doing was street racing. of course he has a 302 with a 19 psi blower, but still, I don't think Tremec can handle the load. Guest sector Posted April 19, 2000 Share Posted April 19, 2000 Hey, thanks guys eventually im going to install the 250 gto body kit for the car, and I thought that at some point down the road I might want to upgrade the engine, so the t-56 would be a good choice. However, I want to keep the car as close as possible in apperance and performance to the ferrari, so I believe I've decided to go with the world class t-5. I'm not much of a tranny guy, I mostly just do engines, so do you guys think that I would be better off going with a new one or rebuilding an old one? My z is a 78 280, with a r-200 in the back. My engine is almost complete, and I am getting ready to start in on repairing the rusty battery box, pans, and rails. My question for you guys is which is the better tranny for the money, time, and bucks, the t-5 or t-56. I haven't had my engine dynotested yet, but its an old corvette block, that has been warmed over,according to the machine shop guys I should be putting out 360-370 Hp and 300lbs torque. I know the t-56 is the stronger tranny, but I am trying to do a budget build and was wondering if the t-5 was even worth the consideration.
