Midnight-280Z
Well, i got some cooling problem....damn it...i was just about to get this car ready for some serious work...problems after problems.....OK, first i blew a coolant by-pass hose the one tht goes from the intake manifold to the throttle body about 6 inches long...had to fix it at the Carls Jr parking lot..lol that was pretty funny....Now, everytime i drive my car i can smell coolant. When i stop and turn off my engine i rear a sound coming from the radiator area...(sounds silly but the sound sounds like a long fart) almost like some kind of motor is trying to turn on but doesn't..When i pop the hood, smoke is coming from the top of the radiator by the cap...Can anyone tell me whats wrong? I changed my radiator like a year and a half ago at a shop. By the way i got a 1983 280ZX Trubo engine in there with a 280Z radiator and 2 10 inch electric fans maybe 12 not sure. if that helps..If my radiator is busted, any idea of where i can get a aluminum radiator with an electric fan that isn't goin to cost like a $1000 like MSA sells them for? please help, i am willing to spend about 500 bucks on my cooling system to get it to work properly and in good order.....my car will be maxed out for stock internals soon so i am trying to get the cooling system up to par. Thanks for all the hellp
RedNeckZ
It sounds like you may have a crack in the radiator. You may also have a head gasket problem. From the way you put it, it sounds like that is the problem. Pressure buildup from the head gasket leaking is allowing hot gas pressure to escape into the cooling system and allowing it to put a lot of pressure on the radiator. Which has caused the radiator to split near the top. Could it be near a seam? We need some pictures of it in action to tell you more. Good Luck, you may have to replace the head gasket and the radiator (may be able to repair this problem at the radiator repair shop). RB26powered74zcar
Sounds like your radiator cap releasing pressure into the over flow tank. Maybe you have alot of air in the system from when you refilled the system after blowing the coolant hose. Try getting all the air out of the block/system and maybe change out the thermostat. This is just my thoughts, and where I'd start. Maybe some body else has some ideas for you also... good luck
Midnight-280Z
Thanks for the info guys. its raining where i am at so i cant really take pictures in the rain. However, I am looking for a new head (p90), but i would like my head to last until i find one..thats the hard part. Where should i get a radiator from? I found 3 places that i want it from and only one has a electric fan bracket for the radiator along with an electric fan specifically for the bracket [MSA]...But they want to charge an arm and a leg for it...*sigh* $439.00 for aluminum raiator, $60.00 for bracket, $280.00 for the electric fan. ArizonaZCar has the aluminum radiator for $349.00 (I really like this price) but no brackets or electric fan. I asked if they made one but they said that i would have to fabricate my own..only down side i can see (I suck when it comes to fabricating). bandmzcars.com has an aluminum radiator for $275.00 (Cheapest I found) but doesn't look as nice as the other two. Also i have sent them an email about electric fan brackets and an electric fan but no answer yet.... Anyone know if i can use the electric fan bracket from MSA on the AZC radiator? Also do you knwo what brand and part # for the MSA electric fan. I'm almost sure that i can get the fan cheaper than they charge..So far i'm leaning towards the MSA setup but hate to spend all that money. Thanks again guys..if problem is not fixed when the rain clears up i will take pictures of my car smoking =D

If your radiator is bad, it's not like you have to throw it away and start with a new one. Recore for $75, and have more than adequate cooling at hand without forking over $400.
