Slammed68
I know these factors... 1. Need new shocks 2. Needs to be hammered 3. Want a halfway decent ride quality 4. Want adjustable shocks As long as im not spending over 700 or so bucks on a entire setup, ill be happy. Anyone have any suggestions?
JMortensen
Does "hammered" mean slammed? If so, you'll need a welder. If you have a welder you can section your struts and use Illuminas with your choice of lowering springs. If you want it lower than that you'll need camber plates too which will kill your budget. OlderThanMe
I did my coilovers and illuminas for around $800(parts) and free welding. Unfortunately the modified stock upper spring caps make the coils rub on the threaded collar. To fix that requires camber plates and aftermarket top spring hats (about $400+ in parts and more free welding)
JMortensen
Coilovers don't allow the car to go lower while retaining a smooth ride. They will allow you to lower it to the bumpstops. For the smooth ride he wants, he's going to need to section the struts.
OlderThanMe
For the smooth ride he wants, he's going to need to section the struts. Agreed. You can lower the car to very low with smaller tires and not making it to the bumpstops without sectioning...but sectioning is a good idea to free up strut travel and make a smooth ride and never bottoming out. Slammed68
Well Im not sure if sectioning the struts would be neccesary since im running a larger tire than some. I have 255/40/17's which are bigger than most peoples. Are there any stock size strut and spring combos that have adjustable shocks and a decent spring rate for daily driving. Not looking for a full race setup. We dont have any road courses or auto x aorund here.
OlderThanMe
Sectioning doesn't have much to do with tire size. The taller the tire the more you will have to lower your strut. In fact with a taller tire you need the sectioned strut to lower the car. I have a stock length strut and use a 26" tall tire and with a fully bottomed out strut (no bump stop, just curious about how far down the car would go in the garage) I still had about 3.5" of ground clearance. You can mix adjustable struts with any spring(within reason) since they are independent of each other. I assume that you are meaning for an S30 Z. JMortensen
When you run a larger tire it lifts the car up. The general tendency is for people not to want a big gap between the fender and the tire, so then they lower the car down FURTHER than it would be otherwise. This exacerbates the problem. Here's an example. Look at the rear control arms: Jay Hitchcocks Z with 18's (I think?) See the control arm angles up from the inside to the outside? http://forums.hybridz.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=3838&d=1191604376 See how much ground clearance there is between the rocker and the ground? http://svsrnd.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Jay-Hitchcock-71-V-8-Datsun&id=71_Datsun_at_shop_013 And for comparison, BRAAP's old autox car with 13" rims: Way lower than Jay's car http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b81/BRAAPZ/Pearl/P2Medium.jpg And yet the control arms still point down, not up: http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b81/BRAAPZ/Pearl/?action=view¤t=fattyLarge.jpg
Slammed68
Ahh yeah you have a good point. Im mainly wanting to run a closer tire-flare clearance. Not too worried about the rocker being extremely close to the ground. Tired of having 10 inch gap from the top of the tire to the flare. Just a couple pics - Before cutting coils. After - Only reason I cut coils was so I could start seeing where I wanted the flares. So nobody "freak out" lol. I only want the car about 1.5" lower in the rear. Here is the angle of my control arms. Thats with 2 coils cut off the stock springs.
OR-JO
What size tires and rims are you running? I dig those wheels.
jonus079
im also interested in knowing the size of those wheels
Slammed68
The wheels are 17x9 Cobra Reps Check the movie @ 1:55 to see what it looks like with it out of its little couped up garage. I like em and dont want to change em, but I am also seeing if there is any way I can sway away from the flares.
