Soundmasterg
Hello everyone! My first post here. I just picked up a 1972 240Z that my uncle had for the last 20 years. It was a California car for most of it's life, and appears to have been repainted and undercoated at some point in it's life as the car is very rust free for a Z. There is some battery box rust, some small frame rail and floorboard rust, and some hatch rust. The hatch rust may require a new hatch but we'll see. Anyway, on to the question. The car was sitting in a building for 20 years, and my uncle died and we grabbed the keys that we thought went with it, but they don't really work in any of the locks very well at all so I think they are the wrong keys. The ignition was able to be turned to the on position with lots of persuasion and WD40, so that we could turn the wheels, but then the key fell out and I can't get it to turn again. So it is stuck on. On the side of it, someone wrote "77" so I think it was replaced at some point from a 1977 Nissan. The driver's and passenger's door locks both have an M4080 code on them, which doesn't seem to jive with what others have said on here...that the code should be starting with an M5000? I can't find a code on the hatch lock. I'm thinking of just having all of them retumbled for some code in the range and calling it good. I'd like to get on to trying to get the engine running instead of messing with keys. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to if the code on the locks is correct or not, or if I should just get them all retumbled? Thanks! 1 tuff z
you could look in the glove box for a small white tag that the factory placed there with the key code. most likely, you'll remove all the locks and have a locksmith cut a new key for them [assuming they are all still original and operate with 1 key]. Warren
M4000 series would be the correct code for that year model...just have new keys cut to the code you found and they should work fine.
Soundmasterg
Yah, no white tag, though thanks for the recommendation. Warren is right on and I'm in the process of that. Got new keys made for that code and need to pull the circa '77 ignition switch and have it tumbled for that code. Need some daylight so probably this weekend will do it. Found lots of rust on the back side of the hatch...never was painted from the factory...amazing! I'll probably need a new hatch the rust is so bad there. The rest of the car is remarkably rust free thankfully. Thanks for the help guys. Hoping to start it for the first time in 20 years this weekend if I can get the ignition situation resolved. Soundmasterg
Just an update for those who might want to know. I got a very good local locksmith to retumble the ignition and had some keys made for a code I chose, so the locks and ignition work now. Got the car started today for the first time in 20 years and it runs well! Needs some carb adjustment and the clutch doesn't work.....no resistance at all on the pedal....but moving ahead. Thanks for the help! greg
