Guest PCH280ZX
Hey guys. I am driving a 1980 280 ZX. I love it. My grandmother drove it around for years and finally got tired of it. She handed it off to me to drive. It has a few mechanical problems that I will surely be posting about later but my real question right now is about the sound system. I have no problem with the speakers right now. I assume my grandma didn't crank Led like I do. However my radio is broken (antennae) and I don't really do the cassette thing. My question is this: what easy, quick and cheap sound system that would have minimal effect on the interior look of the car should I get? Really I am looking for only the ability to connect my iPod/soon to be iPhone to the stereo. I wouldn't cry over being able to put in a CD or two but it isn't really that big of a deal for me. I can put the system in the trunk or in the glove compartment. I would just love to keep the interior as original as possible tho. Thanks guys! naviathan
You'll need this: http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=MRA&MfrPartNumber=997471 And this if you want an original power antenna look: http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=MRA&MfrPartNumber=ATPW22&PartType=1161&PTSet=A And you'll need the Factory Service Manual which you can download here: http://carfiche.com BTW, read the websites for instructions on how to acquire each item. And for future reference, there is a search function on this site. Use it.
Guest PCH280ZX
Thanks Nav for the fast response. However I want to avoid adding/replacing the original plating in the car. I was thinking more towards an external unit I could hide under the dash, a seat or something. I found http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=500IDAX001 which is kinda what I am looking for. Is there a way I can hide that somewhere in the car? And does anyone have a brand they like that might go for a little less? I would like to keep the old school radio dial and tape deck. Just looks cool. Thanks for the links for the antanae and the manual. I found a 280ZX antanae online for like $140 or something. Will the one you linked work fine instead? Getting my front right idle arm replaced today. Been shaking like all heck over 35 mph. After this repair my next step is a power steering leak. Guest PCH280ZX
@ drdiabetezx66x: No it wouldn't be hard at all. I just need a cable connecting my iPod to stereo. I would control the songs from my iPod. I don't care if the iPod is sitting out.

I would control the songs from my iPod. I don't care if the iPod is sitting out. i'm pretty sure with that alpine, you can't control the ipod when it is plugged in. hence the whole idea of integrating the ipod with alpine's interface. i have an alpine with the ipod interface that i bought 2 years ago, and the ipod 's screen changes to an alpine logo and the only way u can control it is through the head unit. if u want to use the ipod to control your songs in your car, maybe look at a wired fm modulator or just an fm transmitter. that way u can hide the stereo (and spend less money on a cheaper stereo) and just spend like 50 bucks for an fm modulator and fm transmitter (u need both to work the ipod). The fm modulator works great. i use it for my sirius and in my girlfriends car for my ipod, but u need to have the fm transmitter working as well. no static, and pretty clear sound.
