Guest Anonymous
Mike, Understood. Yeah torque is definately a problem in killing T5's from what I understand of them. They just were'nt intended or designed for anything larger than the 305 V8. (unless they put it in a 350 application I don't know about?) For your application, you can do no better than the T56 I don't think. Still gives you reasonable gears for street driving, and that deep overdrive when you put on your pilots helmet and pursue that low level flight in Nevada! Its exciting to find out just how fast that car is gonna go, that will be cool. Regards, Lone
Mikelly
Well here is a little known secret that I'm gonna let out. I don't even think about the speed or the fact that I will be going THAT fast. If I focus on it (And the subsiquent fear) I'll not be worth a damn. I found out it is better to just work on the technical aspects of the project and then just go do it... A few years ago I took a bet and road a carbon fiber bicycle off Skyline drive in Va., down Thorton Gap to Rt. 211 (17% grade!) and back into Sperryville... I hit 62mph on some 23mm wide road cycling tires, and I passed some cars along the way, and a state trooper who subsiquently gave chase... It was my 33rd Birthday so he cut me a break...but I couldn't focus on how fast I was going, I just went.. that is the same thing I plan to do in the desert...right now I'm just focausing on the lift and other aerodynamic aspects of the project.... And YES I am full blown addicted to speed.... Guest Anonymous
Yeah, me too. I've been over 140 on a motorcycle and its a funny zone you get into, just concentrating on whats ahead, the sound of the engine winding and the pull of the engine. The rush is so indescribable, its no wonder there are so many speed junkies and those jonesin' to get they're cars running. 62 BTW is hauling ass on a bicycle, the road rash you can get from that is not to be believed. I had a friend who had his cleat slip out of a pedal on a fixed cog track bike and did a over the bars move, he looked like 3 miles of bad road kill. (course he was being stupid and riding in on the street.. haha.. we clowned him for quite some time about that..) Lone
Mikelly
I know what that is like... Got "TOUCHED" by a car in 1995 and went down on pavement going about 25mph and I had road rash on the whole left side of my body. I still have some scaring from it. Funny thing was, I had the SCCA SOLO2 season opener the next day. I got all hopped up on pain meds, had my girlfriend drive me and the car to the track, I got in the car, did my runs, took first in my class, and then had her take me home...to this day I don't remember that event, I just know I won it 'cause I have the trophy! Road rash is like being on fire... most unfomfortable feeling in the world, except for the stiff bristled brush we used to did the rocks and dirt out of the injuries... Guest Anonymous
riding a track bike with a fixed gear on the street.. i have 2 of them and finally got around to putting a brake on one after i turned 30.My 3.0 liter straigh six made 276 foot pounds of torque on the dyno with a shot of NOS ( this is with a well worn , crappy fuel injection , turn off the power at 5500 rpm motor). The current project i am working on is an SDS controlled, turbocharged, 120 hp shot to the wheels of NOS , 3.0 liter L-motor,with after market forged pistons and rods. I just don`t want to strew transmission parts all over the track when i`m on my slicks. This is the reason i am putting a six speed behind an L-motor. By the way do you know grinding the structural ribs off the side of a tranny vastly reduces it`s strength.
Mikelly
Yes, grinding the ribs off does, and I need to update my tech article, because there are other mistakes in it that have been borne out here. The reason I did was because Back in 1998 Matt Millen was the only guy I knew that had done this T56 conversion and he ground his off for clearance, and advised me to do the same. I have stated here and in e-mail replies to others NOT to grind those off, as the trans fits just fine, and NOT to cut the speedo sensor Matt, a GM Technician and I identified as a Skip Shift Soleniod. Again, it was 1998, and I couldn't find anyone with a diagram on how the damned clutch assembly went together... So mistakes were made.. However, after try number 8 I got real good at pulling the tranny out of the car... Thank god this swap has become much more popular. BLKMGK
Couple of things... It's not just torque killing T5s - it's weight. Mustangs and Camaros weigh MUCH more than Zs. My Mustang weighed in at over 3500lbs and th eT5 in that car lived behind a 450hp motor making a TON of torque for well over a year. I beat it to death one day and the next it went - in went a used Tremec that shifts like crap. As for grinding - yeah you don't have to grind BUT there are two posts on the passenger side that I WOULD advise cutting off. Not sure what they're there for except maybe to protect sensors during the install but they poke out like little spikes - dump them. My T56 went in with no issues to speak of and I banged VERY little on the tunnel. Up front by the bellhousing some and a little in the back. A prybar was used to clearance things a little more after the trans was bolted down - no biggie. 6speed is heavy but I expect it to shift better than the Tremec. If it's as good as my old T5 I'll be happy. I'll start with a stock shifter and then consider an aftermarket one. I expect to have the torque to pull 6th, I don;t think my motor will be too high strung for that...
Guest Anonymous
Blkmgk, Your gonna love the T56. It shifts as easily as the T-5's and the ratios are IMHO perfect, very little rpm drop between shifts. Despite its cost, if I were putting another manual in another project, it would definately be with a T56. I have the stock shifter in, I thought it might be to tall, but it seems ok, maybe a Hurst or aftermarket sometime down the road, but not as a necessity. BLKMGK
Cool, thanks Lone. I'd hoped it would shift as well as the T5 since Borg designed both of them. Not too worried about the height to be honest - I only got the shifter, no handle. I've found that the Mustang T5 handles fit just fine though Several companies make cheap short ones and I can cut this one down if I want. I've already got one aftermarket one that's shorter in the garage so that's probably what I'll use. I can hardly wait! Is 6th usable for you? What rear ratio? Guest Anonymous
Yeah, 6th is real usable. Mine has the 3.54 (180 for the moment, upgrading that real soon, its getting broken in so I'm not shocking it at the moment). I have 14's on the car still it cruises at 70 at about 1850-1900 rpms. It will cleanly roll on at that point, but small cam, low end torque. For a pass (with authority) though, its shift to fifth and it'll pass just fine.
