DavyZ
Guys, as you know a high final gear is great for the highway in a V8Z. I want to get a T56, but they are very expensive. The T5 is affordable, but limited in the amount of torque it will take. The Muncie 4 speed, like what Fairlady 327 is running is butally strong, but the final ratio is only 1:1; way too low for the highway. So, the question is: Is there a feasable way to get a .70 or final ratio from a 4 speed? I just have to ask, because my curiosity is getting the better of me. fl327
ive already been bugging my buddies at the shop about that one davy. no they say it cant be done, unless you have bucks, then you can do anything. the only overdrive you can get with a four speed is the 4+3 doug nash, and thats expensive and known to be faulty. but then again, ive seen ford trucks with four speeds that go 1-2-3 0D??? who knows. this is my real curiosity, will a wct5 bolt up to the same bellhousing as a muncie??? im using a lakewood scattershield in my setup. Guest John Adkins
Didn't GM make an Overdrive 4 speed manual? In Mopar land, we have a version of the A-833 4 speed that has a .73 OD 4th, which is what I just bought to use in my Z car-Mopar SB swap. The A-833 was used behind everything from slant-6s to Hemis so it's very durable. Ford made a couple of versions of the TopLoader 4speed with an overdrive 4th gear. Mike C
There is the Richmond 6 which gives you a super low first and only 1 overdrive. The Ford truck tranny actually uses an overdriven 3rd gear, then flips the shift arm over. So effectively when you push the shifter into 3rd you are really engaging tranny in the 1:1 4th. When you pull the shifter into 4th, you are engaging the tranny into the now overdriven 3rd. Pretty interesting way to handle it, just an awfully large spread between gears. I have a friend running this tranny in a '55 Ford customline with a 292 ci stroker Ford 6 cylinder based on the old mechanical tappet 223 style, he kept breaking the original 3 speed with BorgWarner electric OD. The Tremec 5 speed is the cheapest way to get a single over drive 5 speed and will take the power, but I have heard they are notchy shifting.
