Icehound
Can anyone tell me what Nissan did with the VQ40 to make it accept regular unleaded and how the changes can be applied to the VQ35? Also if you reduce the compression (and what ever else you have to do to the VQ35) to do this, where is the threshold, that is how do you measure when you are in the regular unleaded region but still get the most horsepower on the least amount of octane? johnc
You can run a VQ35 on 87 octane. The computer adjusts for the lower octane fuel and dials back power. As far as modifying the VQ35 to run as well on 87 octane as it does on 91 or 93 octane, you'll need to consult with a Nissan ECU engineer. http://www.nissan.co.jp/ or call 0120-315-232 and ask for Hoji in the Powetrain and Engine Management department. patzky1
Run my 04 Maxima on 87 all the time. The power does drop off a smidge, mostly felt in degradation of midrange responsiveness. Don't get me wrong, the thing still puts out some torque. No spark knock noticeable, except for when I rarely and accidentally lug it a lil bit (6 speed). Gas mileage remains the same if that matters. Cheers and good luck!
