How to hook up stock oil pressure gauge to sbc

Just bought the car and the oil pressure gauge is not hooked up. Is it easier/better to use the stock 240 Z gauge or install a new one? Thanks for your help

Id suggest a new gauge and sending unit, if you don,t know the condition of the old stock parts, it generally requires a sending unit, and a connecting wire that connects the gauge to that sending unit, but naturally the pair must be a matched set

 

a few oil pressure gauges use two wire connections, many just a sensor and a single connection, most need a MATCHED pressure sending unit and a gauge

theres a port for the sensor near the distrib and you could also install it near the oil filter in a few blocks

 

normally a 1/8" pipe thread

 

theres also mechanical gauges available that require a tube for oil to reach the gauge, but they tend to be a P.I.T.A. and subject to leaks

That's really the key in determining what direction you want to go in. If you plan on keeping the dash stock looking and want to save a buck, install the Datsun oil pressure sending unit and use the stock gauge. However, if you want to spice up the look of your dash with aftermarket gauges, then use a comparable sending unit.

 

I'm going to try and use the stock sending unit and likely the stock gauge as per JTR. Simple and cheap.

 

Keep in mind that many of these parts are 30+ years old. The risk is whatever you think it is

My initial plan was to use the stock sending unit and gauge. Plans have a way of not working out and my gauge didn't work. I changed to an auto meter sport comp mechanical gauge with a stainless braided line instead of the little plastic line they provide with the gauge. I just pictured that plastic line breaking and covering the interior with oil.

 

I personally wouldn't rely on the stock gauge to tell you much more than simply that you do or do not have pressure. I wouldn't necessarily trust its accuracy. Like Davyz said " these parts are 30+ years old."
